Frederick Keys News Release

FREDERICK, Md.-The Frederick Keys utilized strong pitching and a pair of home runs to earn a 3-1 win over the Salem Red Sox on Monday night at Nymeo Field. With the victory, the orange and black earn a series split against the Sox, heading into Tuesday's off-day. In the game Keys pitchers combined to strike out 10, while Ariel Miranda delivered five innings of one-run baseball, his longest outing since signing with the Orioles in May.

Miranda whiffed six over his first three innings, and worked around runners in scoring position in the second and third before his team cracked the scoreboard against Trey Ball. Facing Tanner Witt, the Red Sox starter went to a full count, but misfired resulting in Witt's first Carolina League home run. Ending the night 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored, the former Kansas State product is hitting .538 (14-for-26) in his first 10 CL ballgames. Nearly half (six) of his hits have gone for extra bases.

The Red Sox countered in the fifth against Miranda, Salem's only run of the night. Mario Martinez opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a fielder's choice before Forrestt Allday brought his teammate home from second. One of only two Salem hits with runners in scoring position all game, Red Sox bats finished 2-for-8 with men closest to home and kept eight on base.

Receiving a no-decision, Miranda struck out seven over five innings, while he did not walk a batter. He threw 79 pitches, 55 for strikes.

Frederick grabbed the lead for good in the sixth against Ball (6-8). With Witt aboard first, Jeff Kemp slugged a two-run home to left to make it a 3-1 game. Completing six innings, Ball delivered a quality start but was saddled with his fourth loss in as many starts against the Keys. Scattering five hits, he allowed three runs, walked two and struck out four.

Out of the bullpen, Nik Nowottnick, Donnie Hart, Jimmy Yacabonis and Cody Wheeler combined to allow two hits over four innings of shutout relief. Nowottnick (4-2) picked up the victory tossing a scoreless sixth, while Wheeler closed things out in the ninth.

The Frederick Keys are off on Tuesday, before heading to Wilmington on Wednesday. The club's final regular season trip to the First State in 2015, the two sides will play a quasi-doubleheader on Wednesday. The orange and black return home on Sunday, July 19 when the club takes on the Potomac Nationals at 6:00 p.m. For tickets, fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
