Winning Streak Ends with Shootout Loss to Reading

January 11, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release

Reading, Penn. - Guy Dupuis tied the game in the third period, but four of five Reading Royals shooters scored in a 3-2 shootout win over the Bakersfield Condors at the Sovereign Center on Tuesday night. Bakersfield is 5-0-1 on their seven game road trip with one match remaining.

In a back and forth opening frame it was the Condors taking the 1-0 lead with a power play goal. Vlad Serov extended Bakersfield's streak to four straight games scoring the first tally of the game with his ninth of the year. Brett Lutes set it up with a brilliant feed from the left point, cross ice to Serov.

Reading got on the board with Jeff Miles' 15th of the season at 6:15 of the middle frame. The Royals penalty killing team went to work after that, killing off four second period power plays for the Condors and eventually springing Miles loose for a late breakaway. The rookie came in alone on G Randy Petruk and slipped a backhander through his legs for the 2-1 lead and his second of the night.

Guy Dupuis tied the game early in the third period when he pinched down the right boards, cut in from the right circle and tucked a backhander home for his sixth of the season. The two teams battled through the third but neither could take the advantage. Regulation was followed with a scoreless five-minute overtime session and into the shootout it went.

In the shootout, Reading dominated. Four Royals beat Petruk compared to three scorers for Bakersfield, who saw their six-game winning streak come to a close. Nonetheless, Bakersfield is unbeaten in regulation in their last six contests (5-0- 1).

The Condors wrap up their East Coast swing in Atlantic City against the first place Boardwalk Bullies on Wednesday at 4:05 p.m. Pacific Time.
