Wings Sneak Past Cyclones in OT, 2-1

December 17, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Eric Kattelus scored with 19 seconds remaining in the overtime session as the Kalamazoo Wings (12-8-0-2) rallied to defeat the Cyclones (14-8-1-1) by a 2-1 final score in front of 2,324 at U.S. Bank Arena on Tuesday night. Rookie goaltender Joe Howe (L, 30 saves, 0-0-1-0), who was signed by Cincinnati earlier today, made an impressive debut in his first ECHL start, helping his team earn a point in the standings, despite being outshot 32-19 in the tilt.

Fortunately for the home crowd, the Cyclones wasted little time before finding the back of the net. After a Dan Eves' slap shot took a sizeable bounce, Cyclones' points leader Wade Megan blasted a tough-angle shot past netminder Jordan Binnington (W, 18 saves, 7-5-0-0) at 5:10. The tally, his 13th of the season, not only gave his team an early advantage, but also made him the league leader in goals among rookies. The Cyclones stayed strong defensively for the remainder of the period, killing two penalties and carried a one-goal lead into the first intermission.

The tilt took a physical turn early in the second stanza as tempers flared and fights erupted across the ice. Due in part to the chippy play, the Wings sent a string of players to the penalty box, giving the Cyclones three consecutive power play opportunities. However, the home team was held scoreless for the remainder of the period and entered the final frame protecting their one-goal lead.

Howe and the Cyclones' defense put on a clinic to start the final period, successfully killing three penalties. However, with 3:03 remaining in the game, Ludwig Blomstrand snuck the puck five-hole on Howe, spoiling the shutout and tying the score at 1. The deadlock held for the rest of the frame and the game went into overtime. At 4:41 of the bonus session, however, Kattelus scored his eighth goal of the season, giving the Wings their second victory over the Cyclones to earn the extra point.

"I thought we played a pretty good game for most of it," said Cyclones captain David MacDonald. "I think our goalie kept us in it for the majority of it...He was great for us. I feel like Joe battled out there for us and made some big saves when we needed him to, so I thought he was great.

The Cyclones will return to the ice at U.S. Bank Arena this Friday, December 20 when they welcome in the Elmira Jackals at 7:30pm! The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a Cyclones Holiday Snow Globe! Tickets are on sale now! Call 513.421.PUCK or visit CyclonesHockey.com to secure your seats.
