Kattelus lifts K-Wings past Cyclones
December 17, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Cincinnati, OH- Prior to Tuesday night no team in the ECHL had been able to defeat the Cincinnati Cyclones when the Cyclones entered the third period with the lead. However, an overtime goal from Eric Kattelus (8th) with 18.3 seconds remaining in overtime changed that, as the Kalamazoo Wings came-from-behind to beat the Cyclones 2-1.
Wade Megan continued to be a thorn to the side of the K-Wings, as the forward gave the Cyclones an early lead. Megan notched his 13th goal of the season with a left circle blast 5:10 into the contest. Six of Megan's 13 goals this season have come against Kalamazoo.
Combining for a total of seven shots in the opening period, Cincinnati outshot Kalamazoo 5-2 in the first period. The two shots on net for the K-Wings tied a season-low (10/26 Vs Evansville-2nd period and 11/06 Vs Wheeling-2nd period) for shots on goal in a single period.
A scoreless second period kept the Cyclones ahead going into the final 20 minutes. The Cyclones entered Tuesday night with a perfect record of 10-0-0-0 when leading after the second period.
For two-thirds of the third period Cincinnati looked like they would improve on that record; however, Kalamazoo's Ludwig Blomstrand brought the K-Wings even with 3:03 remaining in regulation with his eighth goal of the season to force overtime.
For the final three minutes and for most of the overtime, the K-Wings kept up the pressure in the Cyclones zone. In the waning moments of extra session applying that pressure paid off, as Kattelus notched the game-winner with a blue-line slap shot.
The victory extended the K-Wings road winning streak to five games and in the process snapped a season-high tying two-game winless streak.
The K-Wings will return home on Friday, December 20th for a 7:30 p.m. face-off versus the Toledo Walleye during Bell's Winter White Blue Ice Weekend featuring the inaugural Blue Ice Game and an appearance from former Detroit Red Wings great Darren McCarty.
A four-time Stanley Cup winner (1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008) with the Red Wings, McCarty will be signing autographs and meeting with fans starting at 6:30 p.m. on December 20th.
