Atlanta Gladiators News Release
DULUTH, Ga. - On Tuesday, the Gwinnett Gladiators filled in a couple gaps between the pipes by announcing the signing of Paul Karpowich and the acquisition of Brad Phillips from the ECHL's Stockton Thunder.
Karpowich, 25, was drafted in the seventh round (185th overall) by the St. Louis Blues in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft just prior to playing four years in net for Clarkson University. While there, the ThunderBay, Ontario-native racked up a .910 save percentage and a 2.96 goals against average in 130 games started for the Golden Knights.
Most recently, Karpowich played in six games for the Bakersfield Condors before playing one game with the Southern Professional Hockey League's Peoria Rivermen. Last season, Karpowich split his time between St. Louis' affiliates in Evansville and Peoria.
Phillips, 24, who was acquired from the Thunder for considerations, was also drafted in the seventh round (#182 overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers afterspending two years with the United States Under-17 and Under-18 Teams. In the 2006 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, Phillips played in all but one game for the US team, leading them to a silver medal and being named the tournament's top goaltender. After his time there, the Farmington Hills, Michigan-nativeplayed in 15 games for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish over three seasons, compiling a 2.00 GAA and a .917 save percentage.
Following a year with Bloomington of the Central Hockey League, Phillips played the majority of the 2011-12 season with the Trenton Titans, where he went 8-14-2 in 29 games; he also played in one game for the Adirondack Phantoms that season. In the past month, Phillips played in three games with Stockton, going 1-1-1 with a 3.50 GAA and a .883 save percentage.
The Gladiators are members of the ECHL, the nation's premier "AA" hockey league and are affiliated with the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL. All home games are played at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
