Williams Shines, Sounds Start New Streak With 5-1 Win
July 9, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â Nashville left-hander Dave Williams tossed his second consecutive seven-inning, no-run performance against the New Orleans Zephyrs, enabling the Sounds to record a 5-1 victory and take two out of three from their East Division rival on Wednesday afternoon at Greer Stadium. The win increases Nashville's lead in the East to 2 ½ games over the Z's.
Williams was staked to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Tike Redman led off the game by drawing a walk off of Doug Sessions. He stole second, his Pacific Coast League-leading 36th swipe of the year, and advanced to third on a Dave Doster flyout. After New Orleans brought the infield in, John Barnes singled over the head of the shortstop, Jason Alfaro, driving home Redman. Redman later stole his 37th base, marking a new career-high, when he took second in the fifth. The speedy outfielder's previous best in steals came when he swiped 36 bags for Single-A Lynchburg in 1998.
Barnes took care of the offense by himself in the last of the sixth. He led off the inning by driving a 1-1 Sessions offering over the wall in left for his eighth home run of the year and second of the series. He also stole a base, his ninth this year, in the first. He added a single in the eighth, completing a 5-for-8 series at the plate.
After the Z's plated a single run in the top of the eighth off reliever Pat Mahomes, Nashville responded by plating three insurance runs in its half of the frame. Doster and Barnes led off with singles. Gulan grounded into a force play -- Barnes making an out at second -- but an errant throw by Alfaro allowed Doster to score. Alvarez followed with a double to left and Rob Mackowiak broke the game open with a two-run single, scoring Doster and Alvarez.
Williams (3-1), who extended his scoreless innings streak to 25 with his seven shutout innings, struck out four to earn the victory. He has won his last three decisions. Sessions (5-2), a PCL All-Star pitcher, took the hard-luck loss, allowing two runs in his seven innings of work.
Lefty Mike Gonzalez made his Sounds and Triple-A debut in the ninth inning. He pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing a hit and he hit a batter. Mark Corey retired Eric Cole on a flyout to finish off the game and earn his PCL-best 26th save of the year, putting him one stop shy of Geoff Combe's franchise record (27, set in 1979).
The Sounds continue their 10-game homestand by welcoming the Tucson Sidewinders (AAA-Diamondbacks) to town for a four-game series beginning on Thursday evening. Tucson won last season's series by a 5-3 count but the teams split their four meetings here at Greer Stadium. The all-time series is knotted at 18-18. In the 7:00 p.m. opener, Nashville right-hander Matt Guerrier (3-6, 4.44) will square off against Sidewinders righthander Paul Abbott (1-4, 6.37).
