Zephyrs Snap Losing Streak with 8-2 Win over Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tennessee -- Jared Fernandez pitched 8 2/3 strong innings and Mike Moriarty launched a grand slam to lead the New Orleans Zephyrs past the Nashville Sounds, 8-2 on Tuesday Night in Nashville.

Fernandez (6-8) allowed a pair of runs and nine hits, fanning three and issuing no walks, to pick up the win. Moriarty gave New Orleans a 4-0 fourth-inning lead with his second homer of the year. Jason Alfaro ripped a two-run single in the fifth inning and Henri Stanley, who had three hits, led off the sixth with his fifth home run for the Zephyrs, who snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Humberto Cota stroked a two-run double in the ninth inning for Nashville. Rob Mackowiak and Aaron Holbert both finished with two hits and a run scored for the Sounds, who had their seven-game winning streak stopped. Ryan Vogelsong (8-6) surrendered seven runs, 11 hits and a pair of walks with seven strikeouts over five innings to take the loss.

The Z's trail the Sounds by 1 ½ games in the PCL Eastern Division with the series concluding on Wednesday at 12:00 PM. The game can be heard on WTIX-AM 690 and at www.zephyrsbaseball.com with Tim Grubbs calling the action.
