Edmonton Trappers News Release
Second baseman Trent Durrington was 4-for-4 with four runs scored, a double, a home run and three RBI as the Salt Lake Stingers downed the Edmonton Trappers 14-5 Wednesday night at Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake City. The victory gives the Stingers a two-games-to-one series victory and a 4-3 edge in the season series. Edmonton went 3-3 on the road trip and are now 20-26 on the road this season. It was the second time in the three game series that Salt Lake plated 10 or more runs against the Edmonton pitching staff and the 11th time this season that the staff has yielded a double-figure output by the opposition. The loss concluded a stretch that saw the Trappers play 14 consecutive games against their North Division rivals Tacoma, Salt Lake and Portland. Edmonton was 8-6 in that span and remains in first place in the North, a position they have held for the entire month of July. The Trappers begin a five-game series against the Fresno Grizzlies on Thursday night at TELUS Field.
Right-hander Kevin Joseph (2-7) got the start on Wednesday in place of the lefty Eric Knott, who has been one of the club's best starters so far this campaign. Durrington, an ex-Trapper who has come back to haunt his old team on several occasions already this season, homered off Joseph with one out in the bottom of the first inning to give the Stingers a lead they would never relinquish. It was the third homer in seven games for the Australian-born infielder against Edmonton in 2003. Right fielder Barry Wesson gave the Stingers a two-run lead with an RBI double that plated Adam Riggs with two out in the frame. Center fielder Julio Ramirez reached on an infield single with two down in the second inning. Adonis Harrison followed with a base hit of his own, both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Durrington capped the inning with a two-run single. The Trappers got on the board in the third inning when Randy Knorr scored on a ground out by Peter Bergeron. Riggs and Wesson opened the bottom of the inning with back-to-back singles and scored on a two-run double by another former Trapper, third baseman Keith Johnson.
The Stingers added to their lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Robb Quinlan. Salt Lake starter Mickey Callaway (1-0) turned in a stellar effort, allowing only one run on two hits and two walks, while fanning four in 5.0 innings of work. He was replaced by Elio Serrano in the sixth inning and the Trappers got back into the game with four unearned runs off the reliever. Anthony Medrano reached on an error by Serrano, Peter Bergeron drew a walk and Jake Thrower singled to load the bases. Terrmel Sledge was safe on an error by Durrington and advanced to third on a throwing error by Wesson. Medrano, Bergeron and Thrower all scored on the play, which narrowed the Salt Lake lead to 8-4. First baseman Ryan Balfe then plated Sledge with a sacrifice fly to narrow the lead to three runs. A two-run double by Riggs off reliever Jose Rodriguez in the bottom of the frame upped the Salt Lake lead to 10-5. The Stingers capped the scoring in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Quinlan, an RBI double by Riggs, an RBI triple by Wesson and a sacrifice fly by Johnson, all off reliever Anthony Ferrari.
