Song Stellar Again as Trappers Shutout Stingers

July 9, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Edmonton Trappers News Release

Right-hander Seung Song (3-0) tossed 6.0 shutout innings as the Edmonton Trappers defeated the Salt Lake Stingers 7-0 Tuesday night at Franklin Covey Field in Salt Lake City. The win avenged a 12-3 loss on Monday night and evens the season series between the two clubs at three games apiece. Song has turned in four outstanding starts in five outings with the Trappers after being promoted from Double-A Harrisburg on June 12. He has posted a minuscule 1.95 ERA during his time in the PCL and has yielded more than one run on only one occasion. Song, who tossed a no-hitter for Harrisburg earlier this year, is off to the Futures Game in Chicago on Sunday. It will be his third appearance in the annual showcase of the best prospects in professional baseball. The shutout was the fourth of the season for Edmonton and their first on the road, where the club is now 20-25. Edmonton and Salt Lake conclude this three-game series on Wednesday night at Franklin Covey Field. The Trappers will return to TELUS Field on Thursday night to begin a five-game set against the Fresno Grizzlies.

First baseman Ryan Balfe gave Song all the support he would need with a two-run home run off Salt Lake starter Kevin Gregg (1-3) in the first inning. The longball, which also plated Luis Figueroa, who had singled with one out, was Balfe's first as a Trapper. He has been on a real tear since joining the club on June 26 and is now batting .405 after going 2-for-5 on Tuesday night. After leaving two men stranded in the second inning Edmonton took advantage of their opportunities in the third, plating three more runs off Gregg. Designated hitter Luis Ortiz singled to open the inning and advanced to third on a double by right fielder Valentino Pascucci. Third baseman Scott Hodges plated Ortiz with a sacrifice fly and veteran catcher Randy Knorr followed with a two-out home run to give the Trappers a five-run lead. It was the fifth longball of the season for Knorr. Edmonton capped the scoring in the fifth inning courtesy of a two-run home run by Hodges, his seventh of the campaign.

Song yielded a leadoff single to Adonis Harrison in the first inning, but then got former Trapper Trent Durrington to ground into a double play to get out of the frame unscathed. The second inning was his rockiest as Gary Johnson walked with one out and Barry Wesson followed with a base hit to right field. With two out Song walked Wil Nieves to load the bases, but he got the next batter, Julio Ramirez, to ground into a fielder's choice to end that threat. In the fourth inning Adam Riggs drew a leadoff walk and Jeff Guiel earned a base on balls with two down. Song fanned Nieves to get out of that jam. Harrison singled in the fifth inning and Barry Wesson had a base hit in the sixth, but neither runner posed a threat to the shutout. Including his time with Harrisburg Song is now 8-2 on the season. Reliever Chuck Crumpton entered the game in the seventh inning in support of Song and tossed 3.0 shutout innings to record his first save of the season. Crumpton surrendered only a walk to Harrison in the seventh and a single to Robb Quinlan in the eighth.
