Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, PA - If you paid for a ticket Tuesday evening at CONSOL Energy Park, you certainly got your money's worth.
A Pitchers duel, extra-innings, a walk-off win, and fireworks in several different forms highlighted a home-opening 1-0 win in extra-innings for the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial.
Casey Barnes and Jonathan Gonzalez started things off by giving the fans in attendance a dazzling pitching performance from each hurler.
Barnes was dominant through seven innings, allowing three hits and no runs, walking two and striking out three. After giving a leadoff single to Casey Rigby in the fifth, Barnes went on to retire the next ten batters before allowing another base runner.
His counterpart, Gonzalez, was equally efficient, going six strong allowing two hits, while walking two and striking out three. Gonzalez and Barnes went inning-for-inning stacking up zeros on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, by the time their evening was done, neither was eligible to earn the win.
Matt McConnell led off the fourth inning for the Wild Things with a double to right-center field, recording their first hit of the game. However, Washington would be unable to make anything of the leadoff base runner as the next three batters were retired consecutively.
The Wild Things next best opportunity came as they set the table for some two out magic in the bottom of the seventh. James Simmons drew a two-out walk and Joel Carranza followed with a single to right field to put runners at first and third.
Michael Bando then flew out to center to end the inning.
In the tenth, the Wild Things finally broke through.
Carranza was hit by a pitch from Chris Enourato to lead off the inning and advanced to second on Michael Bando's sacrifice bunt.
Shain Stoner followed with his first RBI of the season, a single through the hold on the left side to score pinch runner Allen Boyer.
Game two of the series is set for Wednesday, May 23 with the first pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
Ryan Thomas will be on the hill for the Wild Things opposite Zach Robertson for the Gateway Grizzlies. Tickets are available and can be purchased by visiting www.washingtonwildthings.com, the CONSOL Energy Park box office, or by calling 866-456-WILD.
