Game #5 - Home Game #1 (1-3), (0-0)

Last time out.

The Gateway Grizzlies took game three of the season-opening series with the Joliet Slammers on Sunday afternoon by a score of 8-4. Jerod Yakubik hit an RBI single to start the scoring. Then Landon Hernandez launched a three-run homer, making it 4-0 Gateway at the end of the first. Joliet battled back in the third when Abel Nieves doubled to left, bringing around catcher Ben Hewett. Zach Mandelblatt cut the lead in half, sending Jimmy Waters home from third base on a grounder. They added another run in the 4th when Hewett singled to make it 4-3. In the 5th, after another run had already scored, Landon Hernandez hit his second homer of the game, extending the lead to five runs, and giving him six RBI in the game. Jeremy Tietze went 4.1 innings for Joliet, surrendering eight runs and nine hits. Geoff Brown, Chase Doremus, and Daniel Carela finished off the contest.

For Starters.

Aye Matey, "Captain" Jake Renshaw will once again steer the Slammers' ship in 2012. The right-handed pitcher developed a loyal following among the Slammers' faithful in 2011 as Joliet flew a pirate flag every time he started at Silver Cross Field. The "Captain's" home starts featured pirate themed sound effects and video board slides every time he struck a hitter out. Renshaw won his final seven starts of the regular season, finishing with a Frontier League best 13 victories. He was also extremely consistent last year for Joliet, never lasting fewer than five innings in the regular season. Renshaw tallied four complete games on the season, tying for third most in the league. He was a workhorse, leading the Slammers with 128 innings pitched. Renshaw was a 10th round draft pick out of Ventura College by the Chicago Cubs in 2006. He was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 26th round in 2004 but did not sign. Renshaw spent two years with the Cubs organization and pitched two years at the high-A level with the Orioles organization. The right-hander put up excellent numbers in 2010 in the Golden Baseball league as he posted a 2.39 ERA in 16 appearances.

Movin' on up!

RHP Gaby Hernandez became the fourth Slammers player to move on to affiliated baseball when his contract was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. He joins LHP Aaron Dott, Joliet native RHP Ryan Quigley and Darien native RHP Chris Pack as former Slammers in MLB organizations.

Taking on Traverse City.

The Beach Bums were one of only three teams to post a winning record against the Slammers in 2011. Joliet went 5-7 against Traverse City and 3-3 at Silver Cross Field.

Four is good.

Catcher Ben Hewett and infielder Abel Nieves have hit safely in all four games the Slammers have played in 2012.

Four is bad.

The four errors committed by the Slammers Saturday night matches the franchise record for errors in a game. The Slammers recorded four errors in a game twice in 2011.

Mandel-BOMB, Mandel BOMB!

Zach Mandelblatt's two home runs Friday night matched the Slammers' record for most home runs in one game. The last time a Slammers player hit two home runs in one game was September 2, 2011 when Josh Flores and David Fox both did it against Rockford.

Triple-A talent.

The Slammers boast four players who have played at Triple-A level during their careers, one step below the major leagues. DH Erik Lis played for the Rochester Red Wings of the International League in 2010. Utility man Abel Nieves played for the Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League in 2006, 2009 and 2010. RHP Amalio Diaz pitched for the Salt Lake Bees of the PCL in 2010 and 2011. Meanwhile RHP Tommy Mendoza also pitched for Salt Lake in 2009 and 2010.
