Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) endash The Southern Illinois Miners tied up the series against Evansville with a 3-2 victory on Tuesday.
The game started at a special 10:35 a.m. time as local schoolchildren from the area visited Historic Bosse Field. The kids participated in educational workbooks, on field promotions and special made cheers to root on the Otters.
On the field, both Southern Illinois and Evansville would remain scoreless until the top of the fourth inning. After Matt Zielinski faced the minimum amount of batters through three innings, the lefty walked a batter and surrendered a two-run home to shortstop Jake Kaase.
Southern Illinois would add another unearned run in the sixth inning to pull ahead by three runs.
Evansville then mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. Trailing 3-0, the Otters cut into the lead with an Alex Foltz sacrifice fly and a wild pitch that brought Evansville within a run.
The score stayed 3-2 until the bottom of the ninth when the Otters built one last rally. Facing closer Max Peterson, Evansville put two runners on base but the left-hander struck out Frank Martinez to end the game.
Southern Illinois improves to 3-2 with the win as Evansville's record drops to 2-3.
Ian Campbell (1-0) is the winning pitcher for the Miners. He threw 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Brian Fowler, giving up one hit and two unearned runs. Evansville starter Matt Zielinski (0-1) takes the loss. The lefty allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits during his career-high eight innings pitched. Max Peterson picked up his second save of the season, after tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
Outfielder Alex Foltz finished 3 for 4 in the loss with an RBI for the Otters. Infielder Frank Martinez also collected two hits in the defeat.
The Southern Illinois Miners and Evansville Otters will meet in another mid-morning game on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled again for 10:35 a.m. as a pair of aces meet on the mound. Pitcher Dan Blewett (0-0, 0.00 ERA in 6 innings pitched) will start for Evansville as he will be opposed by righty Dan Harden (0-0, 0.00 ERA in 6 innings pitched).
If Evansville is able to win the last game of the series tomorrow, they would also claim their 700th victory in franchise history. Reaching that milestone would secure Evansville as the only team to win that many games in the 20 year history of the Frontier League.
