Washington Wild Things News Release

WASHINGTON, PA - A trio of singles and a two-run home run proved to be the decisive blows as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial dropped game two of the series to the Southern Illinois Miners by a score of 7-4.

The Wild Things were able to weather an early flurry by Southern Illinois, but the potent offense of the Miners powered back to take game two.

Justin Hall took the loss for the Wild Things, whose record falls to 1-2. Hall went five innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits.

Washington was dealt another blow to their pitching staff in the seventh inning as newcomer Orlando Santos, signed on Tuesday, left the game with an apparent injury. Santos pitched 1 1/3 of scoreless relief for the Wild Things.

Southern Illinois drew blood on the first batter of the game as Darian Sandford tripled to right field off of starter Justin Hall. One batter later, with the infield in, Jake Kaase singled to score Sandford to put the Miners ahead 1-0.

The Miners would strike again two innings later with the first batter, this time in the third as Jason Ganek led off the inning with a solo shot to center to make it 2-0 Southern Illinois

Washington battled back and got on the board after a single by Shain Stoner scored Robbie Garvey from second for Stoner's team-leading 11th RBI of the season. Garvey led off the inning with a single to right and advanced to second when Allen Boyer followed with a walk.

Two batters later, Michael Bando doubled down the right field line to score two more Wild Things, Stoner and Boyer, to give the Wild Things their first lead of the night, 3-2.

Southern Illinois took back the lead with a rally in the fifth inning.

The Miners chipped away at the Wild Things' lead, getting a trio of infield singles in the fifth, the third of which by Jake Jaase to score Jason Ganek to cut the deficit to 4-3.

One batter later, the Frontier League's RBI leader Chad Maddox put Southern Illinois ahead with a single that scored Darian Sandford and Kaase to make it 5-4. Matt Fields followed with a two-run homer to left to give Southern Illinois a 7-4 lead.

That would be all the Miners would need as the Wild Things couldn't mount a second comeback.

Max worked a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save of the year.

Game three of the series between the Wild Things and Miners is set for Thursday evening. Eric Blackwell takes the mound for the Wild Things opposite Shawn Gilblair for Southern Illinois. The first pitch is set for 7:05 and will be broadcast on the Wild Things' flagship station WJPA. Coverage begins at 6:55.
