Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The Evansville Otters lost a nail-biter on Wednesday night 1-0 against the Lake Erie Crushers.
Lefty Matt Crim had the start for the Otters. The Summerville, South Carolina native allowed just two hits through the first five innings until the Crushers were able to break the scoreless tie in the sixth.
Crusher right fielder Robby Kuzdale led off with a double to right field and moved to third on a groundout from shortstop Andrew Davis. Kuzdale then tried to score the first run of the game on a groundball to second, but the throw from Frank Martinez to the plate was on target. With catcher Bubba Garcia blocking the plate, Kuzdale was thrown out keeping the game a scoreless tie.
However, Lake Erie left fielder Rogelio Noris blasted an RBI double to left center field in the next at-bat, giving the Crushers a 1-0 edge.
Lake Erie starter Josh Rickards no-hit the Otters until the fourth inning and held Evansville scoreless in six innings of work.
Down 1-0, Evansville had a chance in the bottom of the ninth inning after a leadoff double from outfielder Matt Sheely. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Greg Fontenot and represented the tying run with just one out. Reliever Mickey Jannis then induced a groundout on a drawn-in infield from Frank Martinez and struck out Deangelo Mack to end the game.
Lake Erie has now won back to back games starting this series, improving their record to 7-10. With the loss, Evansville stands at 6-11 this season.
Josh Rickards (1-0) receives his first professional victory after throwing six innings of two-hit baseball. Matt Crim (0-2) takes the loss for Evansville, despite allowing just one run on four hits in seven innings. Pitcher Mickey Jannis (1st save) threw the last innings to secure the win for Lake Erie.
