
Miners Power Their Way Through Washington

Washington, PA - The Southern Illinois Miners took another series tonight as they defeated the Washington Wild Things 7-4. Jason Ganek homered again and Matt Fields also hit a home run.
The Miners sent LHP Darrin Tew to the mound in his first professional start. He threw four innings, gave up seven hits, allowed four runs, walked one and struck out two. Ian Campbell (3-0) earned the win by pitching three scoreless innings in relief, striking out two.
The Miners took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off Wild Things starter Justin Hall with Jake Kaase hitting an infield single to score Darian Sandford. Sandford led off the inning with a triple. The Miners scored again in the bottom of the third when DH Jason Ganek hit a solo home run to give the Miners a 2-0 lead. The Wild Things scored three runs off Miners starter Darrin Tew in the bottom of the third and one more in the bottom of the fourth to give themselves a 4-2 lead.
The Miners broke open the game in the top of the fifth inning. After Jake Kaase hit a RBI single with one out to bring the Miners within one, Chad Maddox then hit a two RBI single to give the Miners a 5-4 lead. Then Matt Fields hit a two run home run to give the Miners (12-5) a 7-4 lead, which eventually became the final score.
Gabe Shaw pitched a scoreless eighth inning striking out the side. Max Peterson earned his sixth save of the 2012 season.
The Miners will send Shawn Gilblair (2-0) to the mound tomorrow in the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm.
