Last time out...
The Slammers had their five-game winning streak broken by the Washington Wild Things on Sunday afternoon as they lost by a score of 13-5. The Wild Things scored 11 unanswered runs with three runs in the third, two in the fourth, and six in a disastrous fifth inning for the Slammers. In those three innings, Washington compiled nine hits and Joliet committed two more errors. The lowlights included a Mitch Dening three-run homer, RBIs from Shane Stoner in back-to-back innings, and in the fifth, three consecutive at-bats that produced runs for Washington. Joliet actually tallied more hits in the contest than the Wild Things but the Slammers committed four errors, leading to four unearned runs. Tommy Mendoza took the loss for Joliet as he went three innings, giving up five runs on four hits. Offensively Abel Nieves tallied four hits and Erik Lis drove in two runs for the Slammers.
For Starters...
Steven Maxwell's last start came against the Lake Erie Crushers on May 30 as he went seven innings, giving up only one run on three hits. He struck out seven batters while only walking one. Maxwell has 17 K's over his last 14 innings of work and has won two straight starts for Joliet. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft
Second to one...
The Slammers rank second in the Frontier League in team batting average (.271) and ERA (2.79). The only team with a better ERA than the Slammers is tonight's opponent: the Windy City ThunderBolts (2.79).
No hits allowed...
The Slammers pitching staff has held opponents to a .214 batting average, the lowest in the league.
It's getting Windy...
This is the second time this season the Slammers have played the ThunderBolts. They took on Windy City in Crestwood to start the season on May 17 and lost by a score of 4-2. The Slammers went 4-8 against the ThunderBolts in 2011.
Erroneous!
The Slammers have given up the most unearned runs in the league (21). Joliet has committed 17 errors on the season.
Movin' on up!
RHP Gaby Hernandez became the fourth Slammers player to move on to affiliated baseball when his contract was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, May 21. He joins LHP Aaron Dott, Joliet native RHP Ryan Quigley and Darien native RHP Chris Pack as former Slammers in MLB organizations.
Transaction Wire...
The Slammers placed RHP Michael Perconte on the 7-Day DL today. They signed RHP Seth Hobbs.
