Burch Makes History as Beach Bums Cruise

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Chase Burch became the fourth player in Beach Bums history with 200 hits in a Traverse City uniform and Bennett Whitmore tossed a career-high 8.1 innings as the Traverse City Beach Bums pounded the Rockford RiverHawks 12-2.

Leading 3-1 in the sixth the Beach Bums broke the game open. Rockford reliever, Theron Minium hit both Sean Gusrang and Marcus Nidiffer with pitches to begin the inning. Kyle EVeland came up and laid down a sacrifice bunt on which Minium pulled the first baseman off the bag for an error to load the bases. Brian Heere stood in and delivered a sac fly to right to score Gusrang and move up each of the runners. Ryan Still walked to re-load the bases for Kyle Colligan who lined a single to left to score Nidiffer and make it 5-1.

That brought up Burch who lifted a double down the rightfield line to score a run and make him the fourth player in Beach Bums history with 200 career hits, joining Steve Young (217), Matt Brown (208) and J. T. Hall (202). The Beach Bums would add two more runs in the inning and when the dust settled, Traverse City held a 9-1 lead. Three more in the eighth and a Rockford run in the ninth rounded out the scoring.

The offense was more thna enough for Bennett Whitmore (1-1) who went a career-high 8.1 innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out five. Ziggie VanderWall (1-1) took the loss for Rockford.

Traverse city grabbed the early lead as with Still on third and Colligan on first, both reaching on walks, Burch lifted a sac fly to center to score Still for a 1-0 TC lead. Traverse City would add another run in the second inning as Jose Vargas led off the frame with a solo homer to left to make it 2-0.

The lead would once again get stretched in the fourth as Brian Heere delivered an RBI single to score Marcus Nidiffer who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

Thursday against Rockford, Jacob Clem (1-1, 3.65) gets the start for the Beach Bums against Cody Hallahan (0-1, 5.04) for the RiverHawks. It is a Two for Ticket Thistry Thursday at 7:05 p.m with all chairback seats being 2-for-1 that night and fans will receive a dollar off fountain drinks and beer.
