RiverHawks Lose Fourth Straight
June 6, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Rockford RiverHawks News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - Control issues once again plagued Rockford pitching on Wednesday as the RiverHawks lost, 12-2, to the Traverse City Beach Bums at Wuerfel Park.
For the second straight night, the Beach Bums had more runs than hits, thanks to an abundance of wildness. Five Rockford pitchers combined to surrender eight hits, but walked eight, hit four batters and throw four wild pitches. Traverse City, which has one of the lowest team batting averages in the Frontier League, has totaled 22 walks this series and 98 in 17 games this year.
Traverse City scored in the first inning and led the rest of the way. Rockford starter Ziggie VanderWall walked two batters and threw two wild pitches to set up Chase Burch's sacrifice fly. In the second inning, Jose Vargas turned on a 1-0 pitch and hit his fifth home run of the season. In the fourth inning, VanderWall hit a batter and walked another in advance of Brian Heere's two-out RBI single.
VanderWall (0-1) gave up three runs on just three hits, but walked six, hit two and threw a wild pitch in the loss. The Guilford High School alumnus lasted just four innings in his second pro start.
Traverse City broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning that included just two hits.
Traverse City starter Bennett Whitmore (1-1) gave up a leadoff home run to Mike Thomas in the fifth inning, but pitched into the ninth inning to earn the win.
The Beach Bums have won four in a row. Rockford has lost four straight.
Traverse City has a chance for a series sweep at 6:05 p.m. CDT Thursday.
The RiverHawks are home at 7:05 p.m. Friday to take on Southern Illinois. OSF St. Anthony sponsors postgame fireworks.
