Washington Wild Things News Release
Evansville, Ind. - After Joel Hartman drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning, the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, were three outs away from their fourth straight win against the Evansville Otters. But Evansville's Jake Rogers stole the win back for the Otters with a three-run, two-out walk-off home run in the bottom of the inning.
Washington started the scoring early after Michael Parker put himself in prime scoring position with a double, eventually scoring after an RBI single from Delaney, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run. The Wild Things added three more runs in the fourth after two straight errors by Evansville starting pitcher Jorge Lugo, and another by shortstop Zack Stanton. Adam Amar and Billy O' Conner each picked up an RBI in the inning, giving Washington a 4-0 lead after four.
Within the next three innings, the Otters woke up, scoring four runs to tie the game. Vinnie Scarduzio gave them life in the bottom of the fifth, hitting a solo shot, his seventh long ball of the season. Evansville cut Washington's lead down to one after Brandon Cohen hit a fly ball to shallow center, scoring both Billy Killian and Greg Alexander, extending his league leading RBI total to 41. The Otters then tied it in the seventh with Alexander's RBI single, scoring Stanton from second base.
After three scoreless innings by both teams, the Wild Things took the initiative and got aggressive on the bases. It paid off as Hartman hit a drive that dropped into left field allowing McGonigle to score from second, giving Washington the go-ahead run. Then in the bottom of the eleventh, just one strike away from the win, Eryk McConnell gave up the game winning homer to Rogers, the second walk-off between the two teams in the past week.
Kyle Barry picked up the win for Evansville, pitching one inning and allowing one run on two hits. McConnell got the loss for Washington, dropping his record to 0-2. He pitched two innings, giving up three runs on three hits.
The Wild Things and Evansville meet again tomorrow evening at 7:35 p.m. Pre-game coverage starts at 7:25 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM.
