Grizzlies Take Opener from Kings

SAUGET, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies won a back-and-forth battle Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark, defeating the Kalamazoo Kings 10-9 in the first of a three-game series.

Kalamazoo (10-33) went up 3-0 with a run in the first inning and two more in the second.

Bobby Burk answered for the Grizzlies (22-22) in the bottom of the second inning. With two on, Burk hit a 3-2 pitch from Kings' starter Justin Miller over the left field wall to even the score at three.

Burk was 2 for 3 with the three RBIs.

The Kings were up 4-3 when the Grizzlies got a two-run double from Logan Parker in the fifth to put the Grizzlies back on top 5-3. Kalamazoo immediately answered with three runs in the sixth inning to re-gain the lead at 7-5.

The Grizzlies used a five-run sixth to put the game away. Tyler Heil and Charlie Lisk each came up with two-run hits in the inning that put Gateway up 10-7.

Kalamazoo got a two-run home run from Brendan Murphy in the eighth for the final margin.

Heil finished the night 2 for 5 with the two RBIs. Lisk was also 2 for 5. Parker was 1 for 4. Newcomer Matty Johnson, making his professional debut, was 2 for 5 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Richard Barrett (2-2) earned the win in relief for the Grizzlies. Barrett pitched just one inning, allowing three runs, one earned. David Miller pitched the final 1.1 innings for his second save of the year.

The Kings and Grizzlies continue the series with a 7:05 pm game Wednesday night at GCS Ballpark.
