FLORENCE, Ky. - The Lake Erie Crushers dropped the opener of a three-game set with Florence on Tuesday night, falling 5-1 on the road.
Florence took the lead by scoring four times in the bottom of the third. Lake Erie starting pitcher Phil Rummel retired the first seven batters of the game before the Freedom put together three consecutive singles. Tim Grogan belted the first pitch of his at bat over the wall in right for his eighth homer of the season, a grand slam that put Florence up 4-0.
Phil Rummel settled in and kept the score at 4-0. Rummel tossed a season high seven innings and allowed just the four runs on nine hits. He struck out four. Florence tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Jimmy Baker doubled in Tim Grogan. The Crushers broke up the shutout with two outs in the ninth, scoring an unearned run against former teammate Jacinto Gonnel. Raphael Turner led off the inning with a walk and scored as Andrew Davis singled with two outs. Turner came all the way around from first on an error in the outfield.
Lake Erie managed just four hits in the game, three of which belonged to All-Star Andrew Davis, who reached in all five of his plate appearances. The Crushers placed runners on base in every inning but failed to score until the ninth. Lake Erie stranded 12 on the bases, matching a single game high.
The Crushers (23-20) will continue the road series with Florence (18-25) tomorrow night with another 7:05 p.m. contest. RHP Matt Smith (5-3, 3.40) takes the hill for Lake Erie opposite Florence's LHP Bryan Banes (3-3, 4.32).

- Phil Rummel's previous season high for innings was six, achieved three times; He did not walk a batter for the first time as a starter
- Raphael Turner, signed before the game out of Radford University where he led the Highlanders in average, homers, and RBIs, started in left and was 0-for-3 with three strikeouts and a run scored; His start in left moved Travis Vetters to right for the first time this season
