Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - All-Star Game field managers Mike Pinto (West Division, Southern Illinois Miners) and Gera Alvarez (East Division, Oakland County Cruisers) have announced their coaching staffs for the 2010 Frontier League All-Star Game, presented by Peoples National Bank.
Pinto will have his hitting coach Ralph Santana, pitching coach Bart Zeller, assistant coaches Ron Biga and John Lakin and Gateway Grizzlies field manager Phil Warren on his staff. Joining Alvarez on the East bench will be his pitching coach, Cory Domel, along with Windy City ThunderBolts field manager Mike Kashirsky.
A former Frontier League All-Star, Santana is in his third season on the Miners coaching staff and his first as hitting coach. Southern Illinois currently leads the Frontier League in batting average, runs scored, hits, triples, and stolen bases. Santana played in the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies farm systems before joining the Miners for the inaugural 2007 season.
Zeller has been on the coaching staff for the Miners since the team began play in 2007, and currently has Southern Illinois leading the Frontier League in ERA while issuing the fewest walks. As a player, Zeller spent seven seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals' organization, including spending the 1970 season as a player and coach in St. Louis. He is in his first season as pitching coach after three years as the hitting coach.
Ron Biga has been on the staff in Southern Illinois since 2008 while 2010 is John Lakin's first season with the Miners. Biga and Lakin both serve as coaches and advance scouts for Southern Illinois.
Phil Warren is in his fourth season as field manager for the Gateway Grizzlies after a six-season playing career in the Frontier League. A former all-star, Warren ranks in the Frontier League's career top-10 for games played, hits, home runs, and RBIs and was a member of Gateway's 2003 championship team.
"I am proud to add Phil to our coaching staff," Pinto said. "We have had a great relationship the last four seasons, have had mutually beneficial trades with each other and I have great appreciation for the job he has done with the Grizzlies. I always look forward to competing against his squad so it was natural for me to add him to our all-star staff."
Domel is in his third season as pitching coach for the Oakland County Cruisers/Midwest Sliders, and has the Cruisers currently third in the Frontier League for team ERA. Mike Kashirsky is in his first full season as field manager of the Windy City ThunderBolts. He has been on Windy City's coaching staff since 2004. He served as interim manager for the second half of the 2008 season and led the ThunderBolts to their second consecutive Frontier League championship.
The 2010 Frontier League All-Star game, presented by Peoples National Bank is scheduled for Wednesday, July 14 at 7:05 p.m. at Rent One Park. For the latest news on the 2010 All-Star Week presented by Peoples National Bank at Rent One Park, visit www.southernillinoisminers.com/allstar2010.
