West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Whitecaps are getting ready to show off their softer side. On Sunday, May 21, the team will don pink jerseys as part of Sprint Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Fans will also be treated to celebrity food vendors, free pink Sprint t-shirts for the first 1,500 people through the gates and information about breast cancer.

"The pink jerseys and the whole day are a show of support, but we're also using them to raise awareness about breast cancer and raise money for research," said Whitecaps marketing manager Mickey Graham.

Ten of the jerseys that the team wears on the field will be available for fans to purchase through a silent auction during the game. Those interested can stop by the table on the concourse to check out the jerseys up for auction and place their bids. Each jersey will be autographed by the player at the end of the game and then given to the highest bidder. All the proceeds from the auction will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Fans can also donate money to the fight against breast cancer by purchasing pink food items from the Whitecaps special celebrity vendors. WZZM 13's Juliet Dragos, Valerie Lego, Carrie Manders and Hally Vogel as well as Tim Wahl and Darren Wilhite from Thunder 94.5 FM will be roaming the crowd selling pink cotton candy, pink lemonade and pink sno-cones. All the money raised by the celebrity vendors will go directly to the Komen Foundation.

In addition, fans can download a special breast cancer awareness coupon from the Whitecaps website, www.whitecapsbaseball.com, and bring it to the Fifth Third Ballpark box office when they purchase tickets. For every ticket purchased with the special coupon, one dollar will be donated to the Komen Foundation.

But the day isn't just about raising money, it's also about raising awareness. Spectrum Health will be on hand with the mobile mammography unit for fans to walk through. "We really want the day to be fun, but also informative," said Graham. "Spectrum will be bringing the education piece to the event and we're hoping people will leave more informed than they came."

Tickets are still available for Sprint breast cancer awareness day on Sunday, May 21. For more information, call (616) 784-4131.
