Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (May 17, 2006) - In front of over 2,000 students for Honor Roll Day and the largest crowd of the year at Community Field this afternoon, the Burlington Bees (16-21) beat the Lansing Lugnuts (23-15) 7-2 to extend their winning streak to four in a row. Miguel Vega hit his second home run of the series and drove in three while Valentino Arce had a season-high three hits and drove in two to lead the offense.
Lansing got on the board first with two runs in the top of the fourth against Bees' starter Michael Penn. Brian Pettway led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Anthony Hatch. Hatch advanced to second on a throw to the plate and then scored on a double by Brian Bormaster before Anthony Garibaldi grounded out to end the inning. Penn (2-1) didn't allow any more runs through six innings and earned the win for the second start in row.
The Bees answered the call in the bottom of the fourth inning against Lansing starter Kristian Bell (3-2). Mario Lisson led off with a double and Kiel Thibault was hit by a pitch to bring up the hot hitting Vega. Vega smashed a pitch into the wind over the wall in left for his second homer in as many days and his team-leading fifth of the season to put the Bees ahead 3-2. Vega has hit in five straight games and is the second player to homer in consecutive games. JP Lowen followed with a single and advanced to second when Sean Shoffit dropped a throw from shortstop attempting to start a double play. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third and a walk to Ethien Santana loaded the bases. Arce extended the lead to 5-2 with a base hit up the middle for his second hit of the game. After Bell hit Chris McConnell with a pitch, Carlos Arroyo lined out hard to shortstop and Bell was removed in favor of Adrian Martin who got out of the inning with two groundouts.
The Bees added a run against Martin in the sixth on some outstanding base-running by Arce. With Santana at third, Arce at first, and one out, Arroyo hit a groundball to second. Shoffit came in to field the ball and looked at Arce who stopped 15 feet away from first. Shoffit threw to first to get Arroyo, but Arce drew two more throws in a rundown allowing Santana to score easily despite the double play. The Bees added their final run against Paul Phillips in the eighth. Lowen led off with a double to right-center, went to third on a groundout, and scored on a single up the middle by Santana. Santana was 2-2 with two walks, an RBI, and scored a run, but had his streak of a stolen base in three straight games snapped.
Yovany Damico pitched two scoreless innings in relief and allowed one hit, hit two batters and struck out one. Rayner Oliveros finished off the ninth inning and caught Jacob Butler looking with strike three to end the ballgame.
The Bees and Lugnuts continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Chris Nicoll (2-2, 2.00) will start for the Bees against RH Russ Savickas (1-0, 2.87) of Lansing. The gates will open at 6:00 for a Sombrero Thirsty Thursday featuring 2-for-$3 specials on all bottles of Pepsi products and all cans of beer throughout the game. Community Basket raffle tickets are also available. The drawing is set for Friday night during the series finale after Sunday's game was rained out.
