Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities ended their season-high three-game losing streak Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium, outlasting the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-1. Cory Meacham pushed his scoreless innings streak to 10 since returning from the Disabled List on May 8, outdueling Kernels' starter Moose Mosebach to lead the Swing to victory.
It was the first win in exactly one week for Quad Cities (16-21), who had suffered four rainouts and three losses - including two in one day - over the previous six days. Cedar Rapids (19-21) could only muster four hits all night long, with two of them coming in the bottom of the ninth when the Kernels plated their only run.
Meacham (2-2) set the tone, overcoming three walks over his first two innings to settle down for six shutout frames. The righthander from Deatsville, Alabama allowed only two hits and induced 11 groundball outs on the night, with two line drives standing as the only outs recorded against him through the air. He struck out one and walked four, using a pair of double play balls to escape the only trouble he saw all night. Meacham has yielded six hits over ten scoreless innings in two starts since being activated from the DL.
After four scoreless frames, Quad Cities reached the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the fifth. Luis Cotto dumped a soft blooper into right field with one out, and moved to third base when Casey Rowlett sent an opposite field double into the right field corner. Moments later a pitch by Moose Mosebach sailed over the head of catcher Brett Martinez, allowing Cotto to race home and break the scoreless tie. Though Rowlett was gunned down at the plate one batter later, the Swing took a 1-0 lead.
Quad Cities added an insurance run in the eighth when Colby Rasmus checked in with a two-out single, one of his three hits on the night. A walk to Randy Roth pushed him to second base, setting the stage for Brandon Yarbrough to come through with a run-scoring single up the middle.
Ahead 2-0, the Swing blew the game open with another rally in the ninth. Pinch hitter A.J. Van Slyke got it started with a single to left, moving to second when Cotto was hit by a pitch. With one out Daniel Nelson looped an RBI single into right-center. Jose Martinez capped the scoring with a laser shot to left field that left the yard for his second home run of the year, a two-run blast that gave Quad Cities a commanding 5-0 lead.
Mosebach (3-1) took his first loss of the season for Cedar Rapids despite a strong outing that lasted into the eighth inning. The 21-year-old righthander allowed two runs on eighth hits over 7.2 frames, striking out four while walking one.
Scott Vander Weg (6) picked up his first save since May 2, entering the ballgame to protect a 2-0 lead in the eighth. The 33rd round pick in 2005 out of Lamar University tossed a 1-2-3 eighth before allowing the only Kernels run of the game on a two-out double by Jordan Renz in the ninth.
