Mosebach suffers first setback despite quality outing

Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities (16-21) put the game out of reach with a three-run ninth inning at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night as the Kernels (19-21) fell to the St. Louis farmhands 5-1 in front of 1,901 fans on a Fairfax State Savings Bank Free Money Wednesday.

Cory Meacham (2-2) held the Kernels to just a pair of hits through six innings of work before giving way to Jon Mikrut who held the lead with a flawless seventh. Scott Vander Weg earned his sixth save of the year for the Swing.

Cedar Rapids starter Robert Mosebach (3-1) was equally impressive for the Kernels as he held the Swing to just two runs over 7 2/3 innings of work. The Swing touched up the right-hander for single runs in the fifth and eighth innings before Ryan Aldridge took over with a pair of outs in the eighth.

There was some controversy surrounding the Swing's run in the eighth as the independent umpire working the bases, who began the night behind the plate, appeared to miss a pickoff attempt of the Swing's Colby Rasmus at first base. It looked as if Mosebach had clearly nailed the Cards' prospect for the third out of the inning, but to everyone's amazement Rasmus was ruled safe. After Randy Roth drew a walk to extend the inning, Brandon Yarbrough lined a pitch to center to chase Mosebach from the game.

The Swing jumped on Mosebach's replacement, Aldridge, for three runs in the final frame with the back-breaker coming on a two-run homer by Jose Martinez. Aldridge gave up three hits and three earned runs in his one total inning of work Wednesday night.

Prior to the ninth inning the only two hits collected by the Kernels were base knocks by Dallas Morris and Jordan Renz. Brett Martinez began the ninth with a single and the makings of a rally emerged when Brad Coon drew a one-out walk to put two runners on. But with Renz at the plate a pitch in the dirt caused Hainley Statia, who reached on a fielder's choice, to break for third where he was promptly thrown out by Yarbrough. The miscue proved costly as Renz smoked a double to right-center to plate Coon with the team's only run.

The Kernels also ran themselves out of an inning in the second when Morris was caught stealing for the first out. Travis Schlichting drew a walk, which would have put runners on first and second with no outs, for Stantrel Smith. Smith ultimately drew a free pass from Meacham on a wild ball four that sent Schlichting to third and would have scored Morris.

Mark Trumbo grounded out to end the only threat that Meacham would face. Rasmus, the Cardinals' No. 2 prospect according to Baseball America, stole the show with a 4-for-5 night at the plate to raise his average to .309.

The game, which took 2 hours and 44 minutes to play, was delayed for 11 minutes in the top of the second inning when the independent umpire working behind the plate was hit directly in the face by a Mosebach fastball after catcher Brett Martinez got his signals mixed up. The force of the impact split the umpire's chin and the two man crew was forced to head to the locker room and switch positions.

The two teams meet again Thursday night for the third game of their four-game set with right-hander Tommy Mendoza (1-4) scheduled to face Swing southpaw Adam Daniels (1-3) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday nights are Buck-A-Cup Nights at Veterans Memorial Stadium with $1 beer and soda available throughout the game.
