PEORIA, IL - Luke French did not enjoy his early wake up call in Peoria. The Whitecaps lefty allowed six runs (5 ER) on nine hits in just five innings on the way to a 6-2 West Michigan loss.
Robinson Chirinos led off the first inning with a home run for the Chiefs. Mark Reed hit a two run shot in the third inning that made the lead, 4-0. Reed went deep for the second straight game after he did not hit a home run in any of his first 20 games of the season.
With two more runs in the fifth when the Whitecaps committed three errors, Peoria moved in front, 6-0.
Matt Joyce, who committed two errors on the same play in the fifth came back with doubles in each the sixth and seventh innings. Joyce scored in the sixth and drove in the Whitecaps other run in the seventh.
Ryan Roberson delivered the RBI single to score Joyce in the sixth.
Jake Baxter pitched two innings of hitless and scoreless relief for the Whitecaps. Orlando Perdomo kept the Chiefs off the scoreboard for one inning.
Peoria starter Todd Blackford allowed nine hits in 6.2 innings, but allowed just one run en route to the win. Scott Koerber and Ed Campusano combined to complete the game on the mound for the Chiefs.
Pedro Cotto went 3-for-4 with a double at the plate for the Whitecaps and has hit safely in eight consecutive games.
