Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING, Mich. - Jacob Turner notched his first professional win and the West Michigan Whitecaps (18-30) defeated the Lansing Lugnuts (28-19), 4-2, on Thursday night on Jackson Field.

Turner (1-2), the 9th overall pick of the 2009 Draft and the Detroit Tigers' top prospect, allowed only a Balbino Fuenmayor two-run homer in his 5 1/3 innings while striking out five Lugnuts.

Jamie Johnson provided the winning margin with a tie-breaking RBI single in the fifth inning. Two batters later, Wade Gaynor reached on a fielder's choice that scored Luis Palacios for a 4-2 lead. On the play, the Lugnuts' Oliver Dominguez was ruled to have dropped Mark Sobolewski's throw for an attempted forceout at second base. Lansing manager Sal Fasano was ejected for arguing the call by bases umpire Guss Curtis.

Lugnuts starter Ryan Shopshire (2-4) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings.

In defeat, Lansing designated hitter Brad McElroy doubled and drew a walk in five plate appearances to extend his on-base streak to 21 straight games.

The Lugnuts next head out to South Bend for a four-game Memorial Day weekend series against the Silver Hawks. The series opens on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at The Cove with Lansing right-hander Dave Sever (1-1, 3.12) opposing Hawks right-hander Eric Smith (3-3, 2.56.)
