Burlington Bees News Release

Clinton, IA (May 27, 2010) - The Burlington Bees squandered a big lead in the opener, but got a big game from a spot starter in the second to earn a doubleheader split with the Clinton LumberKings by scores of 6-5 and 2-1 at Alliant Energy Field on Thursday night.

In game one, the Bees parlayed a spate of early hits into three runs in the second inning and one in the third in game one. All came with two outs, as Fernando Cruz lifted an RBI double down the left field line and Hilton Richardson followed with a missile to the right field corner that became a two-run triple. In the third, Wil Myers singled, stole second, then came home on Rene Oriental's RBI single to give the Bees a 4-0 lead.

Starter Bryan Paukovits struck out a season-high eight batters, but could not get out of the fifth inning as he allowed four runs on four hits with two walks. He left with a lead, but Ryan Dennick (L, 0-1) allowed the game-tying and game-winning runs to come home in the bottom of the sixth when Brandon Bantz singled one home and Daniel Carroll legged out a bunt single to drive home the other. The loss was the Bees' sixth straight, tying a season high.

The tides turned in game two, however, as the Bees turned to the bullpen for a spot start. In his first start since he was a student at the University of Connecticut in 2008, Dusty Odenbach (W, 2-3) allowed a run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts in five and a third innings.

The outcome was anything but certain, however, when he turned the ball over to Onassis Sirrett (S, 1) in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and runners at second and third, Sirrett struck out Vinnie Catricala and induced a fly out from Mario Martinez to quell the rally. Sirrett faced only three in the ninth to close out the 2-1 win, the Bees' first since Friday in Wisconsin.

Adam Frost picked up a pair of RBI, and Ryan Wood had two hits to lead the offense.

The Bees open a four-game series against the Quad Cities River Bandits on Friday night at Community Field with School's Out Night presented by Westland Mall. Celebrate the unofficial start of summer with the season's first post-game fireworks display presented by J&M Displays. Gates open at 5:30 with first pitch following at 6:30.
