Chiefs Fall 3-1 to Cedar Rapids in Series Finale

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs gave up unearned runs in the second and fifth innings that came back to haunt them in a 3-1 home loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels Thursday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 26-22, three and a half games behind the Kernels for first place in the Midwest League's Western Division.

For the second night in a row Cedar Rapids got on the board first, scoring against starter Jeffry Antigua in the second inning. Casey Haerther reached second on a two-base throwing error by shortstop Hak-Ju Lee and advanced to third on a Jeremy Cruz single. Justin Bass grounded into a double play that allowed the run to score for a 1-0 Kernels lead.

The Kernels continued to produce in the fourth inning doubling their lead against Antigua. Haerther singled to center with one out and advanced to third on a double by Cruz. Bass, who drove in a pair on Wednesday singled to left to extend the lead to 2-0 before Antigua induced an inning-ending double play.

Cedar Rapids added to their lead in the fifth with the second unearned run. Kevin Ramos singled and advanced to second on a Jon Karcich sacrifice bunt. Jean Segura singled to Ramos to third and a throwing error by Greg Rohan got past catcher Jonathon Mota for a 3-0 Kernels lead.

Fabio Martinez shut the Chiefs down over six innings allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out seven. The Chiefs finally got on the board in the seventh against reliever Buddy Boshers. Justin Bour doubled and advanced to third on a Mota single. Newcomer Jae-Hoon Ha lifted a sacrifice fly to the warning track to make the score 3-1. But with Mota at second Boshers got back-to-back groundouts to end the inning.

The Chiefs came within a foot from at least tying the game in the eighth. With two down Matt Cerda singled off Boshers and Rohan followed with a single to left. Bour drilled a flyball deep to right that Cruz caught against the wall to end the inning with the tying runs on base. Peoria didn't threaten against Michael Kenney in the ninth.

Antigua (1-4) took the loss with five innings in which he allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits while striking out one. Ryan Searle pitched two innings and did not surrender a run on two hits while walking one and striking out one. Frank Batista threw two perfect innings in his first game as a Chief while striking out four.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Jae-Hoon Ha (RF) - Ha went 1-for-3 in his Chiefs debut and drove in the only run for Peoria on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.

Notes...The Kernels now lead the season series 5-4 and the team's do not meet again until June 25 to start the second half...Searle missed his turn in the rotation on Wednesday with a blister on his right middle finger...Antigua has lost consecutive starts for the first time all season...Mota became the first Chiefs catcher to start consecutive games behind the plate since May 6-7...Lee was caught stealing for just the third time all season when he was thrown out in the first...Thursday was only the second time this season the Chiefs have lost a home series...The Chiefs have now lost six of their last seven games at home...The Chiefs went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position Thursday...Friday is FANomenal Friday and Going Green Night, featuring tips and tricks on becoming more eco-friendly...There will be a Pitch-In For Charity Tennis Ball Toss following the game...There will also be a Boy Scout sleepover on the field following the game...The Chiefs start a four-game series with the Beloit Snappers Friday at 6:30 PM... ...The Chiefs will start RH Rob Whitenack (3-3, 7.13) against Snappers RH Miguel Munoz (1-3, 3.74)...The broadcast can be heard starting with the pregame show at 6:15 p.m. on 96.5 ESPN and www.peoriachiefs.com.
