Dragons Fall In Extra Innings At Lake County
May 27, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Eastlake, Ohio-Kyle Smith's suicide squeeze bunt single brought in Casey Frawley from third base with the winning run with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Lake County Captains defeated the Dayton Dragons 7-6 on Thursday afternoon. The Captains trailed 6-4 entering the ninth inning before scoring two in the ninth and one in the 10th to win.
Lake County loaded the bases in the 10th on an error, a hit batsman, and a walk with one out. Captains manager Ted Kubiak called for the squeeze and with Frawley racing in from third, Smith got a bunt down to the right side of the mound to allow the winning run to score.
For the second straight day, Dayton took the lead in the top of the first inning. Didi Gregorius tripled to right-center field and scored on a wild pitch. Lake County's Jeremie Tice answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the first to tie the game.
The Dragons regained the lead in the fourth. Shane Carlson started the inning with an infield single and advanced to third on Tommy Nurre's double to the right field corner. Josh Garton's sacrifice fly brought in Carlson to give Dayton the lead, and Kevin Coddington singled to center to score Nurre and make it 3-1.
In the fifth, Alex Oliveras and Andrew Means both singled and Carlson delivered a two-out double off the right field fence to drive in both runners and give Dayton a 5-1 lead.
Tice responded with his second home run of the game, a solo shot to right in the bottom of the fifth. The Captains scored another run later in the same inning to pull within two at 5-3, then scored one in the sixth to make it 5-4.
Dayton added an insurance run in the ninth when Mark Fleury singled and scored on Oliveras' double to the center field fence as the Dragons took a 6-4 lead.
But Lake County scored twice in the bottom of the ninth and nearly won the game in regulation. Dragons center fielder Andrew Means made a perfect throw home to nail Chun Chen, who was trying to score from second with the winning run, before reliever Mike Konstanty pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out situation to send the game to extra innings.
Dayton collected 11 hits after getting 10 on Wednesday, marking the first time this season that they have reached double figures in hits in consecutive road games. Carlson, Fleury, and Oliveras each had two hits.
Dayton (19-29) begins a new series at West Michigan on Friday at 6:35 p.m. J.C. Sulbaran (3-3, 5.00) will start for Dayton against West Michigan's Jake Todd (0-5, 5.15). The next home game is Tuesday, June 1st against the Kane County Cougars at Fifth Third Field.
