
May Players Of The Month Nominees Announced

DAYTON, OH - For the fifth consecutive season, the Dayton Dragons and 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM have teamed up to honor the Dayton Dragons 1410 ESPN Radio Hitter and Pitcher of the Month. Fans can log on to www.daytondragons.com upon the completion of each month and vote for who they feel were the best Dragons players over the past 30 days.
Each month, three hitters and three pitchers will be selected as nominees based on their performances on the field. April's winners were Chris Richburg and Donnie Joseph. The hitting nominees for the month of May are Josh Garton, Shane Carlson, and Frank Pfister. The pitching nominees are Joseph, Pedro Villarreal, and Chase Ware.
The winning players for the month of May will be honored on Thursday, June 3rd, during an inning break of the game against Kane County. Mark Neal, Program Director for WING-AM and host of Dayton Sports Scene, will present the award to the winning players on the field. There will also be a Player of the Month luncheon on June 4th at Skyline Chili on Brown Street in Dayton at 12:00 noon. Fans may attend to ask questions to the winning players and receive autographs. The players will be available to the media for interviews.
Below are the nominees for May (with stats through May 26th):
Hitter of the Month Nominees:
* OF Josh Garton - Batting .272 and is tied for first on the Dragons with five homeruns. Garton was brought up from Extended Spring Training on May 1st.
* IF Shane Carlson - Batting .271 and is ranked third in RBI (16). Carlson went on a red-hot streak, in which he hit .327 with 12 RBI over 13 games.
* 3B Frank Pfister - Batting .272 with the second-most doubles (11). During the middle of the month, Pfister went on a 12-game hitting streak where he raised his season batting average 34 points.
Pitcher of the Month Nominees:
* LHP Donnie Joseph - Has allowed just one earned run in nine May appearances. Struck out 22 batters in just 11.2 innings. The Dragons' April Pitcher of the Month was recently promoted to Lynchburg.
* RHP Pedro Villarreal - Has compiled a 2-1 record after four starts, in which his ERA is 1.74 over 20.2 innings. Villarreal has struck out 17 while walking just six. Opponents are hitting a lowly .210 against him during the month.
* RHP Chase Ware - In six relief appearances in May, Ware has allowed just two earned runs over 20.2 innings. Ware has struck out 17 batters while issuing only two walks. Ware has a 1-1 record in May, and holds a team-low opponent batting average (.159).
