Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that right-handed pitcher Frank Batista and outfielder Jae-Hoon Ha are joining the Chiefs from Extended Spring Training. Outfielder Richard Jones has been sent down to Extended Spring Training and right-handed pitcher Jonathan Nagel has been placed on the disabled list with an arm injury to make room on the roster. Batista and Ha will be joining the team in time for Thursday's 6:30 PM game against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at O'Brien Field. Batista, 21, was signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in January of 2009 and pitched in the Dominican Summer League last season. In 58 and 1/3 innings the Dominican native struck out 63 and walked just seven. He compiled a 4-2 record and a 3.55 ERA in 15 appearances for the DSL Cubs, as well as recording three saves out of the bullpen. Ha, 19, will be the youngest player on the Chiefs roster when he joins the team. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Hwewongu, South Korea in September of 2008 and spent all of last season playing for the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League. Ha appeared in 65 games for the Hawks as an outfielder or designated hitter and hit .242 with a pair of home runs. He had 15 doubles on the season and hit .444 with 11 RBI with the bases loaded. Ha was briefly converted to catcher in Spring Training but has since switched back to the outfield. Jones hit .216 in 37 games for the Chiefs this season with 11 extra-base hits, including two home runs, and 17 RBI. He played Wednesday and went 2-for-3 while scoring a run on a fielding error in the sixth inning of a 7-3 loss to Cedar Rapids. Jones played both corner outfield positions for the Chiefs and saw limited action at first base. Nagel, who is 1-2 with a 4.34 ERA in seven appearances, including four starts, lands on the DL for the second time this season. He spent 16 days on the DL earlier this season before pitching May 3 versus Cedar Rapids. In 18 and 2/3 innings pitched he struck out 20 batters and walked seven. He has one save to go with his one win and opponents were hitting .233 against him. He last pitched on Monday against Quad Cities in the Chiefs 8-7 extra-innings loss. He pitched the seventh and eighth innings of that game and allowed one run on one hit while striking out three. He faced one batter in the ninth and gave up his only hit of the day before leaving the game due to injury.
