July 10, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI- All nine hitters in the West Michigan Whitecaps batting order reached base against Bowling Green starter Hunter Wood, fueling a balanced offensive attack in a 4-3 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.
After stranding the bases loaded in the second, the Whitecaps bounced back the very next inning for two runs with two outs when Ross Kivett ignited a rally by legging out a double. After a walk to Mike Gerber, Joey Pankake delivered the first of his three hits on the night with an RBI single to score Kivett and tie the game at one. Will Kengor then provided another clutch two-out hit to bring Gerber home with the go-ahead run and a 2-1 lead West Michigan would never relinquish.
Arvicent Perez kept the momentum going in the fourth with a leadoff bunt single down the third base line, ultimately scoring on an RBI base hit by Derek Hill. Ross Kivett then chimed in again, grounding into a fielder's choice to plate David Gonzalez with a valuable insurance run and a 4-1 margin.
Spencer Turnbull (7-2) earned the victory with a quality start, pitching six-plus innings and allowing just two runs while scattering eight hits with six strikeouts and only one walk. Gabe Speier came on in relief in a key spot, inheriting two runners with no outs in the seventh, and proceeded to induce three consecutive pop-outs on his way to retiring all six batters he faced. Midwest League All-Star Joe Jimenez closed out the game for his tenth save of the season in 13 tries, yielding an unearned run before slamming the door shut.
