July 10, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. -They battled valiantly for 14 innings, but the Great Lakes Loons eventually dropped the final game of a four-game home-and-home series on Friday night.
Juan Kelly hit a one-out solo home run to right field during the top of the 14th inning to give the Lansing Lugnuts a 6-5 victory over the Loons at Dow Diamond. It was Kelly's first home run in more than a year.
A three-run 7th inning earned the Loons a 5-2 advantage late in the game. But Lansing responded with three runs of its own during the top half of the next inning to tie the game.
Great Lakes first baseman Matt Beaty gave the Loons the lead with a one-out rocket shot single over the outstretched glove of Lansing shortstop Dawel Lugo, making it a 3-2 Great Lakes advantage.
The hits just kept coming from there.
Designated hitter Kyle Garlick added a second run with an infield single and outfielder Alex Santana furthered the lead with an RBI single to right field. Garlick had the chance to notch a walk-off win during the bottom of the 9th inning, but grounded into a double play.
Great Lakes infielder Jimmy Allen was called on to pitch in relief for the top of the 14th inning and took the loss while Jose Fernandez earned the win for Lansing.
Great Lakes (43-40) grabbed its first lead during the bottom of the second frame after a pair of Loons runners reached base to lead off the first two innings of the game.
Catcher Julian Leon struck out to lead off the 2nd inning, but reached first base on a wild pitch from Lansing starter Jesus Tinoco.
Next, left fielder Federico Celli walked to move Leon to scoring position. Great Lakes infielder Cristian Gomez slapped an opposite-field single into right field, scoring Leon and earning the Loons a 1-0 lead.
One batter later, fellow-infielder Kelvin Ramos added another run, scoring Celli on a line-drive single to left field which bulked the lead to 2-0.
During the top half of the next inning, Lansing (51-34) cut the home team's lead in half on what appeared to be a routine fly ball.
Centerfielder Alex Verdugo lost a one-out pop fly in the sun and his error brought home Lansing's first run of the game. Lugo tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI base hit past Gomez later that inning.
The Loons open a four-game road series against the Fort Wayne Tincaps on Friday. Knuckleballer Matt Shelton (1-0, 4.70 ERA) is scheduled to start for Great Lakes. He will oppose Fort Wayne starting pitcher Dinelson Lamet (3-4, 3.95 ERA).
The team returns to Dow Diamond on Saturday, July 18 for Star Wars Night. The game will feature special appearances by characters from the movie series and players will wear Star Wars themed jerseys during the game.
The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
