Snappers Fall Despite Great Start by Gossett

July 10, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release

BELOIT, Wisc. - On a night that was a rollercoaster for both sides, the Snappers fell to the Timber Rattlers, 9-1. The game appeared to be headed for a quick pitchers' duel early on, with Beloit starting pitcher Daniel Gossett and his Wisconsin counterpart, David Burkhalter, locked into a scoreless tie for the first five innings.

There was an interesting storyline surrounding Gossett, however, as he flirted with history by taking a perfect game into the fifth inning. He retired the first batter in the fifth, but then shortstop Yairo Munoz-- who had just entered the game as a substitute-- made a throwing error on a routine ground ball that was hit by Elvis Rubio.

Gossett worked around the error and kept the no-hitter alive until Mitch Meyer led off the sixth inning with a single on a ground ball to right field. The Rattlers would take the lead a few batters later on Blake Allemand's RBI fielder's choice to second base.

The Snappers quickly answered back in the bottom of the sixth, however. Almost as if atoning for his error earlier in the game, Munoz hammered his eighth home run on a fly ball to left field to tie the game at 1-1. That would be the end of the night for Burkhalter, who finished with 5 1/3 innings and just the one earned run on four hits. He walked none and struck out six Snappers.

Wisconsin wasted no time taking back the lead in the seventh. Carlos Leal doubled to lead off the inning, and Elvis Rubio followed him up with a single. Alan Sharkey then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Timber Rattlers a 2-1 lead. Gossett managed to escape the inning without any further damage, but wound up taking a hard-luck loss. He went seven innings while giving up two earned runs on four hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out four Timber Rattlers.

After Gossett left the game, Wisconsin jumped all over the Snappers' bullpen. Reliever Cody Stull started the eighth by walking Meyer, and then third baseman Jose Brizuela was unable to field consecutive sacrifice bunt attempts. This was the beginning of a disaster inning for Beloit, as the Rattlers sent 12 batters to the plate and put up a seven-spot. Dustin DeMuth, Leal, Sharkey, Sthervin Matos, and Gregory Munoz all had RBIs in the inning, making the score 9-1.

The Snappers had early chances to break the game open against Burkhalter, as Joe Bennie hit a one-out double in the fourth inning, and Argenis Raga did the same in the fifth. Beloit was unable to capitalize either time, however.

There were some bright spots for the Snappers' lineup. Bennie and Raga each went 2-for-4, and Munoz, who didn't even start the game, entered and ended up driving in the only run of the night. Gossett had one of his better efforts of the season.

The Snappers will play the second game of this four-game set tomorrow at 7:00 PM CT. They'll send Junior Mendez (2-6, 4.76 ERA) to the mound. He will be opposed by Wily Peralta, who is on a rehab assignment for the Brewers. To buy tickets call (608) 362-2272, stop by the office, or go to www.snappersbaseball.com.
