Bees Trumped by River Bandits

(Davenport-IA)- The Burlington Bees (40-45) scored the first run of the night but Quad Cities (55-29) went on to score nine unanswered runs, handing the Bees a 9-1 loss, Friday night at Modern Woodman Park.

Tim Arakawa led off the game by reaching on a fielding error and then moved to second on a Jake Yacinich sacrifice bunt. After Nick Flair lined out to right, Trever Allen singled up the middle, scoring Arakawa, giving the Bees the 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Quad Cities answered in the bottom half of the first. After Jason Martin grounded out to start the frame, Jamie Ritchie singled and moved to second base when Alex Bregman was hit by a pitch. Nick Tanielu put the River Bandits on top, smacking a double to left center, scoring both Ritchie and Bregman, giving Quad Cities a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Trent Woodward reached second base on a single and an error, giving the River Bandits a runner in scoring position. The next batter, Sean McMullen, singled to right, putting runners at the corners. Jewell was able to get out of the inning unharmed, getting Ryan Bottger to line into a double play, ending the inning, keeping the score at 2-1.

After Alex Hernandez flew out to center to start the bottom of the fifth inning, Jason Martin shot a single to right field. Martin went on to steal second and third on back-to-back pitches. and came home to score on a Jason Martin single to center, upping the River Bandits' lead to 3-1.

The River Bandits went on to open the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning. Quad Cities scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a Alex Bregman bases clearing three run double, extending the lead to 8-1. Later in the inning, Ramon Laureano capped off the frame with a single to right, scoring Bregman, upping the lead to 9-1.

River Bandits' starter, Christian Powell (2-0) earned the win for Quad Cities while Jake Jewell (4-5) was charged with the loss. The Bees and River Bandits meet for game two of the series, Saturday night at 6:00. Austin Robichaux makes the start for the Bees against Brandon McNitt for Quad Cities.
