Clinton, IA - Jeffeson Medina (L, 3-9) allowed six runs over 4.1 innings, as the Clinton LumberKings (5-11, 31-54) fell to the Peoria Chiefs (8-8, 41-43) Friday night in the series opener at Ashford University Field in Clinton. Peoria scored in each of the first six innings, while Dewin Perez (W, 1-2) tallied his first Midwest League victory in the 9-4 final.
The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead vs. Medina on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning, but Clinton tied the game on Pat Leyland's RBI single in the bottom of the frame. The tie lasted just three batters, as Kenny Peoples-Walls homered in the top of the second inning. His first home run of the season made it 2-1 Peoria, a lead the visitors did not relinquish.
Medina gave up a run in the third on an RBI single by Alex DeLeon, a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Jhohan Acevedo, and a pair of runs on a wild pitch in the fifth.
Peoria broke the game wide open with a three run sixth inning vs. Osmer Morales. The righty struck out Acevedo to begin the inning, but a walk and RBI doubles by Paul DeJong and DeLeon made it 9-2.
Perez, who entered the game with a 12.34 ERA over his first five MWL starts, scattered seven hits and two runs over five innings. The Columbian stranded seven men on base over the outing, while the Peoria bullpen held the big lead. Nicholas Frey allowed one run over two relief innings, while Anderson Gerdel surrendered an earned run over one inning of work. Kyle Grana allowed the first two men to reach in the ninth inning, but struck out Wayne Taylor, Kristian Brito, and Martin Peguero as he sealed a 9-4 Peoria victory.
Seven Peoria starters reached base at least once, as Paul DeJong finished a home run shy of the cycle in a 4-5 night. Every Clinton starter outside of Chris Mariscal recorded at least one hit, while Martin Peguero tallied his second three-hit game of the season.
Game two of the four game series is scheduled for 6:30 CT Saturday night in Clinton. Austin Gomber (8-3, 3.47) will make his third start of 2015 vs. Clinton. The righty is 2-0 with a 1.26 ERA in his first two starts vs. the LumberKings. Zack Littell (2-4, 3.73) is scheduled for his third start of the season vs. the Chiefs. The 19-year-old is 0-1 with a 3.11 ERA in his first two outings vs. Peoria. The LumberKings broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCI Radio.com, and LumberKings.com.
