Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, Ky. - Two Dayton home runs and a four-run seventh inning led the Dragons past Bowling Green to salvage the last of the four-game home-and-home series in an 11-2 victory in front of 7,612 fans at Fifth Third Field Thursday evening.

Bowling Green (8-7, 45-40) saw a four-game winning streak come to an end, but the Hot Rods have still won six of the first nine games played in July. Dayton (6-9, 45-40) is back on the winning track, after dropping four straight and eight of its previous 11.

While Dayton owned most of the evening, it was Bowling Green that took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Hunter Lockwood's two-out RBI single off Dragon All-Star Tyler Mahle that plated Alec Sole, who roped an opposite-field double to left one batter earlier.

Dayton, though, snatched the lead for good in the bottom of the second against Brad Wallace, who was making his first professional start in his Midwest League debut. Avian Rachal's first pitch bunt-single started the frame and set the table for Jimmy Pickens, who clobbered the next pitch for a two-run home run over the right-field fence, giving the Dragons a 2-1 lead.

Neither team added runs until the bottom of the fifth, when Dayton's Chad Tromp cracked a RBI double to put the Dragons up 3-1. After a Cory Thompson groundout, Shed Long hit his first home run of the season, upping the Dragons lead at 5-1.

Wallace (0-1) exited following Long's bomb, surrendering seven hits and five runs over 4.1 innings of work.

Bowling Green inched within 5-2 in the seventh, as Lockwood pasted a triple to right-centerfield and scored on Mac James' RBI single to centerfield.

However, the Dragons sent four runners home in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 9-2. Reliever Ryan Pennell issued consecutive walks to Long and Argenis Aldazoro, while Gavin LaValley's RBI double off the top of the wall in right scored Long, and Aldazoro sprinted home on the errant relay throw to give Dayton a 7-2 advantage.

Damion Carroll attempted to stop the bleeding, but Pickens drove home LaValley with a RBI single and scored later in the frame on Luis Gonzalez's to account for the 9-2 score.

Dayton scored twice more in the bottom of the eighth on Pickens' two-out, two-run single for a season-high five RBI to reach the final score of 11-2.

All-Star Mahle (9-5), shackled Bowling Green after the first, allowing just one run on five hits over 6.0 frames while striking out five and walking none.

Lockwood and James each collected two hits, as the Hot Rods only had four at-bats with runners in scoring positions, converting on two opportunities, while leaving four men on base. Rachal and Pickens each knocked three hits for Dayton, who ratcheted 15 knocks as a team.

All-Star Hunter Wood (1-3, 1.33) kicks off the Hot Rods four-game set in West Michigan at 6 p.m. CDT opposing All-Star right-hander Spencer Turnbull (5-2, 3.22) from Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Mich.
