Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BELOIT, Wisc. - The Beloit Snappers fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels by a score of 6-4 at Pohlman Field on Thursday night after a hard fought game that could have gone either way.
Beloit drew first blood when a wild pitch by Cedar Rapids allowed Sandber Pimentel to score after he doubled (12) on a fly ball to center field and advanced to third after an Iolana Akau single to third base.
The Snappers doubled their lead to make it 2-0 when Pimentel hit his second double of the night (13) on a fly ball to left field that allowed Joe Bennie to score.
Cedar Rapids eventually found their bats in the fourth inning, scoring three runs. The Kernels first run was scored by Nick Gordon when Edgar Corcino took off for second and Akau tried to throw him out. Corcino then scored on a ground out to the shortstop by Zach Larson to tie the game up at 2-2. Jorge Fernandez gave Cedar Rapids the lead with a solo homer (3) on a fly ball to right field, making the score 3-2.
Beloit took back the lead in the bottom of the sixth when they were able to score two runs. The first run was scored when Jose Brizuela hit a triple (2) to right field that plated Max Kuhn to tie the game up again at 3-3. Brizuela then scored with the help of a single on a line drive to left field from Justin Higley to retake the lead and make the score 4-3.
With Koby Gauna on the mound for the Snappers and two outs on the scoreboard it had appeared that Beloit had won the game after an athletic diving catch by Joe Bennie in left field. The umpires made the ruling that Bennie did not catch the ball, which advanced two runners to score for the Kernels, retaking the lead 5-4.
The controversial call fired up Snappers manager Fran Riordan who was ejected shortly after.
The Kernels added a run for good measure when Corcino singled on a groundball to center field that brought in Gordon to make the score 6-4.
Unfortunately, Beloit wasn't able to come back from the controversial call after they had thought they had won the game as they suffer their second straight loss.
The Snappers begin a four game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Pohlman Field tomorrow. Game time is at 7:00 PM and gates open at 6:00 PM tomorrow night. After the game, there will be a fireworks show, courtesy of Budget Truck and Auto Body. To buy tickets go to www.snappersbaseball.com, stop by the office, or call 608-362-2272.
