Wheeling Nailers News Release
Johnstown, Penn. - The Wheeling Nailers blasted home goals in a 7 minute stretch of the 2nd period and Bryan"Boomer"Ewing scored his team leading 40th of the year to cap the onslaught in an 8-5 win at the Johnstown Chiefs Saturday night.
The 5 goal 2nd was the highest goal total in a single period for the Nailers this year.
Ewing became the 6th ever Wheeling Nailer to enter the 40 goal club and the first to do it in 12 years since John Varga had a 56 goal campaign in 1996-97. Erik Johnson, Billy Ryan and Andrew Lord each had 2 goals for the victors. Tommy Goebel scored his first Wheeling goal since Nov 26 in his 2nd game back with the Nailers after spending most of the past 2 months with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL.
The victory combined with other results around the ECHL North (Trenton and Elmira victories) puts the Nailers in a 4 way tie for 2nd place in a wild race that appears destined to go down to the wire. Trenton has taken over first place in the division with 72 points and then 4 teams are tied just one point behind them as Wheeling, Johnstown, Cincinnati and Elmira all have 71 points. The top 4 teams in the North Division advance to the Kelly Cup Playoffs in April.
Wheeling blasted 19 shots on goal in the 1st period (2nd highest single period total for the Nailers this year) but found themselves trailing 2-1.
Erik Johnson's first of the night was the lone Nailers tally in the opening frame.
Then the flood-gates opened for the Nailers in the Flood City with a 5 goal outburst in the 2nd. Wheeling scored all their 2nd period goals between the 6:49 and 13:03 marks of the 2nd period.
Billy Ryan tied the score at 2-2 with his first of the night.
Erik Johnson took a fine feed from Jordan Morrison and circled around Chiefs goalie Sebastian Dahm for his 2nd of the game and 17th of the year to give the Nailers the 3-2 lead at 7:46, just 57 seconds after Ryan had tied it.
Tommy Goebel's 11th of the year at 9:08 put Wheeling in front 4-2.And Andrew Lord stuffed in a 5-on-3 power play goal on a loose puck in the crease at 10:36 to make the advantage 5-2.
Billy Ryan blasted home a slap shot from the high slot over Dahm's left shoulder on a nice tip forward by Kelly Miller for his second of the game and 6th of season in just 12 games since joining the Nailers.
With Wheeling in front 6-2 the Chiefs pulled goalie Sebastian Dahm in favor of Ian Kesserich. It was the second time in this 5 game stretch the Nailers have sent Dahm to the showers early having also done it on Friday. March 6th with a 3 goal rush in the 1st period at WesBanco Arena.
Jason Spence scored late in the 2nd for Johnstown and Ryan Del Monte lit the lamp early in the 3rd to cut the Nailers advantage to 6-4 but Wheeling get back in the scoring groove again with Andrew Lord's 2nd of the night and 15th of the year coming at 6:51 to make it 7-4.
Then Bryan Ewing's milestone 40th goal of the season at 11:40 on the power play assisted by Ryan would cap the scoring evening for the Nailers with their 8th.
It was the most goals in a game for the Nailers since December 26th ina 10-6 victory over Reading.
It was the most goals the Nailers had scored in a road game this year surpassing the 6 they put on the board at Reading on January 24th in a 6-4 win.
