Last week, the Wheeling Nailers watched the intensity rise with their longtime rivals, the Reading Royals, as the teams met up for a home-and-home series. Both clubs were victorious on their own ice sheets, with Reading coming out on top 3-1 on Thursday, before the Nailers bounced back with a 3-2 triumph on Saturday. Adam Hughesman opened the scoring just 34 seconds into Thursday's game for the Royals, as defense dominated the early part of the contest. Reading added two more goals in the third period from David Marshall and Olivier Labelle, with Sahir Gill accounting for the lone Wheeling marker in the final minutes. On Saturday, the Nailers got off to a quick start, as Shane Bakker and David Gilbert built a 2-0 lead in the opening stanza. Bakker and Cam Reid exchanged tallies in the second, before Hughesman's second of the week trimmed the Wheeling lead to one. The Nailers' penalty kill put forth an incredible showing on Saturday, limiting the Royals to one goal in 16 power play minutes, which included two full five-minute penalties.

Penalty killing has been one of Wheeling's biggest strengths in the first five games of the season, as the team has thwarted 21 of 23 power play chances for the opposition, including a 14-for-14 mark on the road. At the same time, the power play has shined, turning on the red light four times. Zach Yuen has recorded a point on three of the four power play goals, and currently leads the team in defensive scoring with five points. Shane Bakker's two-goal game on Saturday was the second of his pro career, with both coming against Reading. With an assist on Thursday night, Clark Seymour notched his first professional point. Franky Palazzese has started all five games in goal for the Nailers, giving Montreal/Hamilton contracted netminders 16 straight starts in the regular season and playoffs, dating back to April 12th. Clark Donatelli is currently one win away from 100 as Wheeling's bench boss.

Sat. 11/8 WHEELING NAILERS @ Cincinnati Cyclones, 7:35

Sun. 11/9 Indy Fuel @ WHEELING NAILERS, 4:05

This week, the Wheeling Nailers will collide with their new division rivals for the first time in 2014-15, as they play three games in three days in three different cities. On Friday, the Nailers will visit Ford Center for just the third time in three years, still in search of their first road win against the Evansville IceMen. Evansville is the lone team in the ECHL without a regulation loss this season, having gone 3-0-1 in its first four tilts. On Saturday, Wheeling will makes its way a little bit closer to home, when it runs into the Cincinnati Cyclones at US Bank Arena. Last season, the Nailers and Cyclones split their 12-game season series, running the historical numbers to 54-53, in favor of the good guys. Cincinnati currently sits at 3-1-0, after winning its first two games against the Quad City Mallards. On Sunday, WesBanco Arena opens its doors to the first ever meeting between Wheeling and the expansion Indy Fuel. Four of Indy's first eight games have required bonus hockey, as the Fuel enters the week with a mark of 2-3-2. The eight games are tied for second most in the league, trailing the Bakersfield Condors (9). Prior to meeting up with the Nailers, Evansville hosts Elmira on Wednesday morning, and Cincinnati hosts Indy on Friday.
