Wheeling Nailers News Release

The Wheeling Nailers best start in the history of the organization was extended to 10 games in their 4-3 overtime loss at the Mississippi Sea wolves Sunday night. Wheeling stands at 6-0-4 and remains the only team in the league with zero losses in regulation now one month into the regular season.

Rob Sirianni led the way for the Nailers with his 2nd multi-goal game in a row for a 4 goal weekend. Aaron Clarke registered Wheeling's other tally.

It looked like the Nailers were all set to get both standings points as they led 3-1 with 2 minutes left but Mississippi's Mathieu Menalson scored at 18:06 and again at 19:36 on a short-handed and extra-attacker goal to force overtime. Melanson completed the hat-trick with the game winner at 2:41 of OT after the Nailers had come tantalizingly close to securing the victory themselves on multiple occasions on their overtime power-play.

The two teams had played to a scoreless duel in the first 2 periods with both goalies making save after save. Wheeling entered the game as the highest scoring team in the league with 5 goals per game and Mississippi was 3rd in the league at 3.8 but both teams were stymied by David Brown of the Nailers and Ryan Munce of the Sea wolves.

The dam broke early in the 3rd with the two teams combining for 3 quick goals in the first 4 minutes. Clarke scored at 1:07 of the 3rd for Wheeling for the 1-0 lead and then Mississippi tied the score just 58 seconds later only to see Sirianni give the Nailers the lead again at 3:45.

Wheeling ended their 0-for-16 power-play drought going 1/4 on the night. They continued their improved penalty-kill play holding Mississippi to 0/2.
