Wheat Kings Fall to Broncos in Shootout

Brandon, MB. - The Swift Current Broncos 7-game losing streak to start the 2018-19 Western Hockey League season is over.
The defending champion Broncos scored a dramatic 3-2 overtime shootout win over the hometown Wheat Kings Saturday night, snapping Brandon's home ice win streak at three.
The Wheat Kings, who edged Moose Jaw in overtime on Friday night, outshot the Broncos 55-33 but couldn't seem to get that all important insurance goal after grabbing 1-0 and 2-1 leads through the first two periods.
Broncos' netminder Joel Hofer was brilliant, especially in the second period when he stopped 22 of 23 Brandon shots. In overtime, he made five more saves and then turned away Stelio Mattheos and Luka Burzan in the shootout.
In making his first ever WHL start, Ethan Kruger finished the night with 30 saves, including two in the five minute overtime.
Shootout goals by Alec Zawatsky and Max Patterson were the difference as Swift Current improved to 1-7-0-0 on the season.
Brandon meanwhile slipped to 5-0-1-1 on the season.
Mattheos had both goals for the Wheat Kings, who will be continue this 5-game home stand Tuesday night when the Spokane Chiefs pay their first visit in two years to Westoba Place.
Not only will western Manitoba hockey fans have a chance to see one of the most talented teams from the U.S. Division, it will be the first "2 for Tuesday" of the 2018-19 season. Fans will receive a "free" ticket to the game with the purchase of another at regular price. As well, the Keystone Centre and Center Plate will be offering a number of concession specials.
Tuesday's game will also be the first of an exciting week of hockey in Brandon.
The Wheat Kings will host the Everett Silvertips on Friday and the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday. On Friday night, the WHL club will welcome home one of the most popular players in franchise history. Former Nashville Predator right-winger Jordin Tootoo will be on hand to perform the ceremonial opening face-off before the game and will be signing autographs during the first intermission.
