Tacoma Rainiers News Release
LAS VEGAS, Nevada - The Tacoma Rainiers (27-26) dropped their series finale against the Las Vegas 51s (22-31) by a final score of 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Cashman Field.
Rainiers starting pitcher Rob Whalen turned in his team-leading sixth quality start of the season. He worked six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out four but did not factor into the decision.
Tacoma's offense collected seven hits on the afternoon, all singles. Left fielder Adam Law led the way, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI. Center fielder Jansiel Rivera (2x4) also collected multiple hits while driving in two RBI.
Las Vegas took advantage of a hit batter to score the game's first run in the bottom of the second, giving the 51s a 1-0 lead.
The Rainiers rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth to snag a 3-1 lead. Law sent an RBI single into center to tie the game at 1-1, and Rivera put Tacoma out in front with a two-run single to right.
The 51s responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Rainiers lead to one run and took the lead back for good with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, creating the final score of 4-3.
Shawn Armstrong (0-2) took the loss and suffered his first blown save of the year after allowing one run on one hit in one inning of work. Mike Morin (1.0 IP) closed out the game for Tacoma, tossing one scoreless frame.
The Rainiers return home to Cheney Stadium to open a five-game series against the Salt Lake Bees on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. PT. Tacoma right-hander Casey Lawrence (3-1, 2.63) will face off against Salt Lake righty Parker Bridwell (1-0, 7.71).
