Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - A four-run fifth inning for New Orleans upset Iowa's bid for a sweep as the Baby Cakes (24-28) captured a 5-1 victory over the I-Cubs (20-30), Tuesday at Principal Park.
Adbert Alzolay carried Iowa through four perfect innings while fanning three in the outing. It was a turn-around outing for the righty who had collected an 8.20 ERA (17ER/18.2IP) through his last four starts. After coming out after just 60 pitches, it was later determined that Alzolay suffered a grade one lat strain, causing his early exit.
Iowa's luck turned when Alzolay handed the ball over to Brad Markey for the fifth. In his first appearance since May 21, Markey allowed four earned runs in the inning, before settling in to spin a scoreless sixth. Anthony Bass took over in the seventh and allowed one run through two frames.
The I-Cubs scored their only run in the fourth, spurred by a Bijan Rademacher double. Rademacher moved to third on a balk and was plated on a Victor Caratini sacrifice fly.
For New Orleans, Sandy Alcantara was superb, holding the I-Cubs to five hits and one run through seven frames. Iowa was held hitless through 3.1, before Rademacher broke the no-hitter with his fourth-inning double. He would finish the game 2-for-3. Chesny Young notched the only other multi-hit game for the I-Cubs, who were held to six total hits, with a 2-for-3 game.
Iowa heads to Colorado Springs for a five-game series with the Sky Sox beginning tomorrow at 7:40 p.m. Follow the action on AM 940 or www.iowacubs.com.
