Sky Sox Drop Series Finale in Memphis 3-2

May 29, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Sky Sox road struggles continued into the final game of their Nashville trip, falling for a fourth straight game to the Redbirds Tuesday afternoon by a score of 3-2. The finale loss capped off a seven-loss road trip in nine games for Colorado Springs. The Sky Sox drop to a 27-23 overall record in the American North division.

Memphis got the day going in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Following Oscar Mercado's leadoff walk and one-out stolen base to get into scoring position, Patrick Wisdom delivered a single to centerfield to give the Redbirds to early lead.

In the fourth, Colorado Springs got back into the game when first-baseman Ji-Man Choi struck a one-out double to right field. After Christian Bethancourt's single put runners on the corners with one out, outfielder Brett Phillips came through with a sacrifice fly ball to right field, marking his ninth RBI of 2018, to tie the game at 1-1.

With the momentum, the Sky Sox went ahead with a solo run in the sixth inning sparked by back-to-back singles to start the inning by Orlando Arcia and Choi. The run was brought in on a fielding error on Wisdom at third base batted by Bethancourt to plate Arcia, putting Colorado Springs up 2-1.

However, in the bottom half of the frame, Memphis found another offensive rhythm. With one out, Wisdom, Luke Voit, and Wilfredo Tovar collected consecutive singles to tie the game at 2-2. After a fielder's choice groundout kept runners on the corners with two outs, a wild pitch would send home the go-ahead and final run of the contest for the Redbirds, making it a 3-2 contest.

The Sky Sox stranded three runners throughout the final three innings, finishing one for seven with runners in scoring position.

Sky Sox starter Alec Asher finished after five and one-third innings of six-hit, three-run ball with two walks and two strikeouts. Relievers Mike Zagurski, Jon Perrin and Michael Brady combined for the final two and two-thirds innings while combining to allow just one hit.

The Sky Sox head back home for a five-game homestand starting tomorrow, May 30 against the Iowa Cubs. For all information on Sky Sox, follow along on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and visit the team's website at www.skysox.com.

Tomorrow's Preview: In the first game of the five-game set against the Iowa Cubs at Security Service Field, the Sky Sox are sending right-hander Freddy Peralta to the mound to face fellow righty Jen-Ho Tseng. In Peralta's last outing on May 24 at First Tennessee Park against the Sounds, he notched his sixth win while allowing no runs and just three hits through five frames with eight strikeouts. Oppositely, Tseng notched his second win of 2018 in his last outing against New Orleans on May 25.

Duel of Dual Homers In Game One: Opposite to Friday night, after Dylan Moore made the difference in game one with his pair of home runs out of Colorado Springs' six total hits, the Redbirds sought revenge Saturday night, making the difference in game two with home runs by Rangel Ravelo and Patrick Wisdom within Memphis' six hits. The two-homer game by Dylan Moore in Memphis on Friday was only the 4th time a Sky Sox player had a two-homer game at AutoZone Park in Memphis. The other three: Greg Vaughn, on April 21st, 2003, Drew Garcia on May 1st, 2014, and Will Middlebrooks on June 10th, 2016.

Blanked Twice: After marking their third team shutout Thursday night in the final game in Nashville, the Sky Sox powerhouse offense was finally put to a stop for the first time Saturday night, coming 48 games in. The shutout loss on Saturday was in game 48, the fourth latest to start a season before getting shutout. The longest to start a season was game number 92 in the 2008 season. The Sky Sox were shut out again Sunday night after another excellent outing from the Redbirds pitching staff, who only allowed six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in the combined shutout.  The last time the Sky Sox were shut out in back-to-back nine-inning games was June 11th and 12th, 2016, both at Memphis.
