Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

The West Virginia Power defeated the Lakewood BlueClaws 6-2 on Saturday evening at Appalachian Power Park. Tyler Waldron pitched the Power to victory with seven innings of work against the Blueclaws.

The Blueclaws scored first in the same fashion as they did Friday evening with a home run from Jim Murphy. The solo shot in the forth put Lakewood ahead 1-0.

West Virginia tied the count in the bottom of the forth with a run from Dan Grovatt. Grovatt doubled down the right field line and then scored following a throwing error and then wild pitch from Blueclaw starter Ervis Manzanillo.

Eric Avila boosted the Power into the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the fifth inning with his second home run of the year on a lined shot over the left field wall. Mel Rojas Jr. drove an RBI double to centerfield in the sixth scoring Justin Howard and giving West Virginia a 3-1 advantage.

Manzanillo (4-4) picked up the loss for Lakewood giving up three runs on five hits in five and one third innings pitched.

Jeff Lanning would add a second home run for the ‘Claws with a solo shot in the seventh inning off Waldron. However, Tyler Waldron (6-3) picked up the win for the Power throwing seven complete innings allowing two runs on three hits and striking out five.

West Virginia added three additional insurance runs in eighth with three hits and two Lakewood errors to go ahead 6-2, which would be the final tally.

West Virginia and Lakewood close the four game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 pm. The Power will send All-Star Jameson Taillon to the mound against BlueClaws left hander Jesse Biddle at Appalachian Power Park.
