Lexington Legends News Release
The Lexington Legends scored four runs in the 10th inning without a hit, and beat the Rome Braves 14-10 Saturday night in Rome.
The Legends scored six runs on six hits in the first inning. With one out, Jordan Scott singled, Enrique Hernandez walked, and Adam Bailey doubled, scoring Scott. Jhonny Medrano singled, scoring Hernandez and sending Bailey to third. Tyler Burnett's double produced two more runs. Ben Orloff singled, loading the bases, and Roberto Pena singled , scoring Burnett and giving the Legends a 5-0 lead. Emilio King grounded to third baseman Edward Salcedo, who threw home, but catcher Christian Betancourt's error allowed Oroff to score the sixth run of the inning.
Rome bounced back with a run in the first and six more in the second to take a 7-6 lead. Evan Gattis started the second inning outburst with his fifth home run of the season. A double by Reyes and a single by Kyle Davis made the score 6-3. Kyle Rose followed with a single, sending Davis to second. Both runners advanced after Bethancourt flied out. Medrano fielded Salcedo's grounder to third, but threw past first for an error, allowing Rose and Davis to score and Salcedo to reach second. Medrano committed a second throwing error after fielding Robby Hefflinger's grounder, and Salcedo scored to tie the game at 6-6. Jakob Dalfonso's single brought Hefflinger home with the go-ahead run.
Lexington tied it at 7-7 in the third inning on a double by Burnett and a sacrifice fly by King.
Rome reclaimed the lead with a single run in the fourth and added another in the six for a 9-7 advantage. The Legends rallied with one run in the seventh on Orloff's RBI single, and scored two more in the eighth to take the lead.
King led off the eighth with a double. DeShields walked, and Salcedo's throwing error on Scott's sacrifice bunt left the bases loaded. Hernandez singled, scoring King with the tying run, and after a force out at home, Chris Wallace, batting for Medrano, delivered a sacrifice fly to put the Legends in front 10-9.
The Braves scored the tying run in the bottom of the eighth on a double by Hefflinger, an infield out and a sacrifice fly by David Rohm. In the top of the 10th, DeShields led off with a walk. Pitcher Tyler Stovall bobbled a sacrifice attempt by Scott, and both runners were safe. Enrique Hernandez also tried to sacrifice, and Stovall's throw to third was too late to get DeShields, leaving the bases loaded. After Bailey struck out, Mike Kvasnicka hit a slow grounder to shortstop. Reyes fielded the ball and threw home, but his throw was over the head of the catcher, Bethancourt, and two runs scored. Burnett walked, loading the bases again, and Hernandez scored as Orloff grounded into a force play at second. Pena followed with a double, scoring Kvasnicka with the final run.
David Martinez (3-0) got the win in relief. Stovall (0-3) took the loss. Lexington has won the first three games of the series, which concludes Sunday. Game time is 2 p.m.
