WHL Moose Jaw Warriors

Weekend Road Trip Ends with Sunday Loss in Calgary

January 5, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Calgary scored four goals in the second period and went on to beat the Moose Jaw Warriors 7-2 Sunday at Scotiabank Saddledome.

The Hitmen used their experience, size, and depth to keep the Warriors pinned inside their zone throughout the first period.

50 seconds into the game, and working on the power-play, Hitmen 19-year-old forward Carson Focht jumped on a loose puck on the left side of the Warriors net and lifted it in to give Calgary an early lead.

Calgary had plenty of zone time in the first period but the Warriors did a good job keeping them to the outside and blocking shots and limiting them to just eight shots.

In the second period, the Hitmen controlled most of the period and spent plenty of time inside the Moose Jaw zone.

Calgary outshot the Warriors 20-6 in the second and got goal from Riley Fiddler-Schultz, Cael Zimmerman, Mark Kastelic, and Adam Kydd to take a 5-0 lead.

Moose Jaw picked up their first power-play of the game late in the second period and they were able to convert, setting up Ryder Korczak for a shot between the circles that beat Brayden Peters glove-side.

Back on the power-play inside the final minute of the frame, Moose Jaw worked the puck to Brayden Tracey inside the left circle where he snapped a puck over the blocker of Peters to make it 5-2.

Just over a minute into the third period, Calgary's Josh Prokop jumped on a loose puck in the neutral zone and then drove across the Moose Jaw line where he let a shot go that found the back of the net to make it 6-2.

Calgary would add another goal later in the frame and went on to win 7-2.

Ryder Korczak had a goal and two points to lead the Warriors and Owen Hardy picked up two assists.  Moose Jaw was 2-for-3 on the power-play and 0-for-1 on the penalty kill.

The Warriors are now off until Wednesday when they take on the WHL leading Edmonton Oil Kings at Mosaic Place.  Tickets are available at the Mosaic Place Box Office and online at www.mjwarriors.ca.

Catch all the action on Country 100 starting with the PreGame Show at 6:40 pm.

Next weekend, the Warriors head to Medicine Hat on Friday, January 10th, which is also the WHL Trade Deadline, and then on Saturday, January 11th they will have a rematch with the Tigers at Mosaic Place.
